Department Love:CSD

Choosing a major can be challenging, scary, and even overwhelming. That is why I was so happy that I already knew what I wanted to do since I was in high school. I want to become a Speech Pathologist which makes me a Communicative Sciences Disorder major (CSD). The only thing I had to worry about was if I would continue to like the major once I started to classes. So far that is not a worry anymore. I loved all my CSD classes and enjoyed working with CSD Professors. But why do I love my department so much?For one, my department is small. The classes are small-medium and all the Professors I’ve had were easy to talk to and always welcomed students into their office hours. They not only provided students with extra help for the class but they also provided students with outside opportunities such as, knowledge of internships and lab work.

Do I only love my department because of the staff?While the staff is amazing, there's a lot of love and support with the students in CSD. There is a mentor program and of course NSSLHA, the National Students Speech Language Hearing Association. These are student clubs that allow students to connect, organize events and get more involved in CSD.    Even with all the reasons I listed above, my number one reason why I love my department is because it’s my passion and I love learning new things within /about it. Department Love: MCC

What I love at the MCC department is how diverse it is: in terms of professors backgrounds, research and interests. You’ll never find two professors that are studying or writing about the same things, but professors always try to make connections between what you may be learning in one class and what another professor has published or researched. I’ve many classes where the professors would use journals and articles written by other professors in the MCC department. There is also a lot of diversity in terms of the career paths students can take, some go on to human rights law, while others want to work in the fashion industry. There is no standard path that one has to take in order to be in the major and that offers a lot of freedom to develop and grow academically and professionally. - Olivia B., OL

Department Love

Teaching and Learning very quickly became my home within the greater NYU community. I had a very challenging first semester and first year transition into college, but I never once thought that I might fit in better anywhere else, and I think that speaks volumes to the Teaching and Learning department and the faculty within. 

The department, the OLs, and the Teaching and Learning Club have worked to ensure a community within the department and a collective body of students who are passionate and interested in the field of education and teaching. I feel truly at home in the T&L offices, and enjoy talking to each and every person that works there and walks through those doors. Thank you Teaching and Learning for allowing me to find my home at NYU, but also giving me the space, opportunities, and resources to explore my interests and passions. Thank you.

Department Love: Nutrition & Food Studies

The Nutrition and Food Studies Department at NYU is located at 411 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003. I still remember the first time I went there: I was out of breath when I reached the office since I was late for my appointment with my advisor (PS. I got lost on my way :( ) However, my advisor and the administrative staff were very understanding and helpful and I immediately felt at ease. Everyone in the department is passionate about food and love what he/she is doing. There is always a new research/new project or food/nutrition colloquiums taking place.  The staff as well as the faculty are both encouraging and a great resource to every student. On a side note: there is always food in the department and so, feel free to come by to say hello to your professors and ask any questions that you may have!
