The Green Mile (1999)
To celebrate 1999 and its contribution to film (I know that sounds weird but hear me out) I re-watched - or watched for the first time - a collection of films released in that year. I don’t know how to present them other than alphabetically. My brain works best when there is some order.
The Green Mile is about prison guards on death row and the inmates who reside there.
Some movies - you forget how good they are. Sure, I liked this movie the first couple of times I saw it - but this time when I watched it I loved it on a whole new level.
I love the supernatural element. I love that some of the good guys are bad guys and some of the bad guys are good guys. I love the urinary tract infection and what happens when it heals. I love the southern, depression-era setting. And I love the end, even though it makes me cry.
Written by Stephen King and starring Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Sam Rockwell, and Michael Jeter - and I’m just getting started.
I have always been a huge Sam Rockwell fan and he played such a great despicable villain in The Green Mile - he used to be my favourite character. But my favourite changed now that I’m a little older and more refined. Suave and deboner (as my mom used to say). Now my favourite character is Delacroix, the mouse trainer, played by Michael Jeter. He studied the Cajun dialect and really got me to feel bad for him even though committed murder.
The Green Mile is 188 minutes! WTF. How come I never noticed that before?
I had only one problem with this movie. The same guys are on shift all the time. They can’t work 24/7 - so where is the other shift? Who do they relieve? Who relieves them? One scene takes place at Tom Hanks’ house, and all the guards are there - so who is guarding the prison?
Otherwise I’d say this movie is perfection.
Happy 20th Birthday to The Green Mile!
