Movie Review | Stepfather 2 (Burr, 1989)

This one is less of a character study and more of a pure horror thriller than the first one, which I can live with. We already know what this guy's deal is, there's no need to unpack it further. I did find it funny how quickly he loses it in this one. In the first one it's implied that he's been with the main characters for a while so there's some sense of build up before he loses it. Here it seems like he's been here for like twenty minutes before he blows a gasket and starts killing people, but then takes forever to kill the nosiest character. So the pacing is not perfect.

On that note, obviously I don't condone murder, but Caroline Williams really shouldn't be a mail carrier if she's gonna snoop through everyone's mail. It's really none of her business if somebody's husband gets dirty magazines through the mail, they're in a small town and this is before the internet, leave the man alone. She blurts all this out during some kind of group marriage counselling session that the Stepfather runs, in case you're wondering why I'm bringing it up. I'm not sure how sustainable a business it is since it seems designed to piss off everyone who takes part.

Anyway, this is definitely worth a watch if you just want to see Terry O'Quinn being creepy and killing people, which Jeff Burr's direction sometimes accentuates with coloured lighting and creeping camera moves. A creeping camera for a creepy man.

  Stepfather 2 The stepfather in Stepfather was stabbed and shot in the finale of that film. It turns out he’s not dead though, and has
