Documentation of QUARTETS (2014) a sound installation designed by Stephan Moore, exhibited at OpenSignal Festival May 16 & 17, 2014. This clip features a quartet with my composition as VALISE (begins at 9:57 in video). 

In this installation, four recordings by four different contributing artists play simultaneously, each recording through its own speaker. The four sound files are chosen at random from all contributed files, forming impromptu quartets. Each quartet lasts for 7 minutes, with a 30-second pause before the next one begins....

There are 86 artists featured in this installation, allowing for a total of 2,123,555 possible quartets. Listening to all possible combinations would require 30 years and nearly 4 months.

Tonight Francisco Lopez performed a piece composed for Stephan Moore's unique multi-channel sound system at the new Issue Project Room space at 110 Livingston. Using field recordings, Lopez created sound terrains which were sometimes suffocating and crushing, other times unsettling and detailed, culminating in a vocal choir piece. We in the audience sat blindfolded, while sounds ricocheted around the room or thundered like a barely contained goliath, immersing us in the sound. A wonderfully immersive composition and sonic experience.

This is the first of five Stephan Moore test sound-pieces for "A New Dimension." Here's what he said about the music in the email today:

...here's 5 recordings of 5 rooms worth of music -- generative processes that evolve & grow in complexity over time.  They have the capacity to bleed into each other.  I may still tweak them, but this is a place to begin...   this is the first 45 minutes of each room, or at least one example of what it could be....

Stephan Moore is a composer, performer, audio artist, sound designer and curator based in Brooklyn and Providence. His creative work currently manifests as electronic studio compositions, improvised solo performances, sound installation works, scores and sound designs for collaborative performance pieces, and sound designs for unusual circumstances. Evidence, his long-standing project with Scott Smallwood, has performed widely and released several recordings over the past decade. He has created custom music software for a number of composers and artists, and has taught workshops and numerous college-level courses in composition, programming, sound art and electronic music. He curates the annual Floating Points Festival at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, where he also serves on the Art Advisory Board. From late 2004 to mid-2010, he performed over 250 concerts with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, serving as their sound engineer and music coordinator, and as a touring musician.
