Flinthook is out!
FLINT! HOOK! IS! OUT!
You were of course going to buy Flinthook, the latest and greatest of pirate platforming action from @tributegames. What you didn’t know is that you will instead buy Flinthook Deluxe, a version of the game that comes together with a 100-page artbook, game’s soundtrack, and 16 wallpapers that you really need if you want to make your desktop look as cool as mine.
$5 extra for the Deluxe is really a no-brainer. The music is fantastic—and you will hear plenty of it while playing—but the art book is where you get to see behind the scenes, to the wonderful world of Tribute’s art director Stephane Boutin a.k.a. @jgsboutain. His art style draws precious soft-pencil cartoons, rivaled only by my childhood hero Miki Muster’s comics. And when Stephane’s designs get turned into pixel art animations by none other than @johanvinet, it doesn’t matter how much I suck at playing the game on a trackpad (do not recommend), I just have to keep on coming to what is by now the signature Tribute Games pixel art and gameplay experience. There’s no coming closer to late-80s fixed-screen maze-jumping treasure-seeking nostalgia.
Get your pirate boots on Steam, PS4 and X1.
<3 game worlds with isometric views ⊟
As someone who grew up adoring games with isometric views like Shadowrun (SNES), X-Com, and various Tactics releases, I love seeing these shots.
The top image is concept art from Stéphane Boutin for Mercenary Kings -- the PC/PlayStation 4 game doesn't play or look like that, but it's going to be an awesome run'n gun regardless when it releases.
As for the second piece, that's "Bookkeeper’s Garden" from Chern Fai. While it's not an actual game, god, I want to play that. I want to manage a magic library and garden, and be that little dude just getting a stack of books and reading them. Actually, I want to play/live in all of these isometric scenes Fai has posted on Tumblr.
