I'm tired of the my client's audience isn't on G+ argument
Subtitle: I've got 99 problems, but Google+ ain't one.
Time for a rant...
Raise your hand if you've heard this in a comment or a post at least once this week (and it's only Tuesday). Something along the lines of I can't market directly to people here so this place isn't worth the time.
Put your hands down, you look silly.
Google+ isn't about marketing directly to people, it's about telling Google you are a trusted authority in your area of expertise, so you're recommended to people who are looking for you.
If you want to market directly, use +Post Ads, opt-in circles, or private messages. None of them will work until you build up that trust and reputation first, though.
Oh, too lazy to build reputation? That's a bigger problem, but remember, when you started your Twitter and Facebook accounts five years ago, from zero, you put in the time and work to build up the organic reach. Is Google+ any different if you're new to the platform? Or are you just burned out from trying?
You'd rather throw money at advertising? Go for it, advertising works or it would be dead by now. But the problem with advertising, though, is that you have to refill the bucket every day.
Conversely, your Google+ activity acts like silt in a riverbed, slowly but surely creating a solid foundation about you and your business that can help your reputation long-term...a reputation that earns you recommendations here on Google+ or in Google search.
Oh, your business isn't one that can build trust and earn a reputation? Hmmm, you got 99 problems, Google+ isn't one of them.
I'm preaching to the choir, I know, but it has to be said here on the platform so it's easier to reference ;)
