HATCHETFIELD TAROT: OC EDITION

Priscilla Lauter is one of the Black Tarot deck's "Anointed," aka one Blessed or Cursed by the forces of the B&W, alongside The Tempered and The Apprentice. Unobscured view of her card's portrait:

Formerly Priscilla Olvido Miranda, Hatchetfield's best political plotter comes from a family of high standing. The reason Watcher World is still around today is because her mother's side -- the Mirandas -- maintained it. They kept it alive before it was ever even called Watcher World.

There's a looooooot of WW lore that I'll likely save for a separate post, but I'll be brief as possible about this specifically lol. It started in the 1920s as an annual carnival. There's an old aqueduct system beneath HF the Waylons utilized and it was their underground route leading to and through the Witchwood, its ending point being the grounds of the carnival. While fun and merriment was had in the main area, those interested in the Lords' dark magic would convene in the aqueducts and partake in debauchery. The carnival never came and went without at least one bloody death.

These sadistic gatherings pleased Blinky greatly -- but it only came once a year. That's not enough. He fed off the dark magic flowing from it, and he wanted more. Thus, the Mirandas dedicated themselves to Blinky and founded Watcher World. Future generations of the Miranda family inherited it to make sure it was still going strong. That Blinky's kept happy.

Because of their sustained upkeep of the park for all of Blinky's pleasures, the family received some perks. Primarily, excellent vision. "Vision" manifests for each Miranda in different ways; sometimes it's literal, and their eyesight is freakily superhuman. Other times, it looks like great instinct, in their ability to deduce things about people very quickly, based off a glance. This is what's kept them in high places. They pick their allies well -- and know what to use to manipulate their enemies.

Priscilla was very good at this. She was witty, cunning, calculating. The Lauters (who more favored Nibbly) were also of high standing, so the union of their families was a match made in hell. Priscilla and Solomon are my Lord and Lady Macbeth. Their idea of dirty talk is what the best weapon is. Politicking is play. They live for it. I love them.

Solomon won his first mayoral election young, and by the time they're married, their goal's to cinch the next election (and the one after that, then the one after that...). Priscilla takes it upon herself to make it happen. She enlists one of HF's best young minds, Brady Lipschitz.

Why him? A few reasons: 1) He started dabbling in photojournalism in high school and used it to criticize how the Lauters were running HF. The kid's smart, so he knows how to get at them. Brady on their side means their image stays cleaner; 2) Because Brady has such a strong sense of justice, Priscilla knows he won't be swayed easy. She also knows he's barely nineteen with a pregnant girlfriend. He'll need the money, so she guilts him heavily with this ("I'm six months along with my little Stephie, and I just can't imagine leaving her destitute... could you fathom the same for the girl you knocked up and the baby boy you're about to have? Oh dear...") 3) Brady's a tech guy. Priscilla herself is a hobbyist photographer and he can better show her how to fix up and work a very special film camera (and special film rolls with... unique properties) that's been in her family for generations.

Lastly: she has a feeling he knows the location of a roll of negatives the Mirandas have been missing since the carnival days.

They contain something that ensures the Lauters keep their power strong.

Despite what Brady thinks is right, Olive gives him the go-ahead to do it. It sucks, but it's only for a little bit, and it ensures when Richie arrives they'll have enough financial cushioning that he can break off after the campaign's over.

Brady sticks around for another couple years, though. Cause one day he catches Priscilla during a mental breakdown that, until now, only Solomon's been witness to.

Priscilla has schizoaffective order bipolar type. It's not from Blinky. It's not from some curse. It's something real that was passed down, and not managed nor taken seriously for a long time. When it risked affecting the Olvido Mirandas or the Lauters' self-image, she started being medicated to their convenience. She didn't like doing this. It made her feel weak. They didn't give her the best psychiatric care; she was on heavy mood stabilizers but no antipsychotics, because her family was afraid it would "block the vision Bliklotep gifted them." Solomon tried giving her antipsychotics, but then she got paranoid of being dosed and would go through periods of not taking her medicine.

That only worked for so long. She'd eventually break down again, and Solomon wouldn't know how to handle it, so the two would get hurtful with one another. He'd get cold and dismissive, because that's how Priscilla gets with herself about it, too. Pride aside, he can't admit to himself the other reason it frustrates him so bad is because he doesn't know how to fix this for her. It can't be fixed. So when she goes "back to normal," they act as if it never happened. She's fine.

Brady's the first person not tied to her by blood or marriage who's seen her like that, and he doesn't shame her. He's extra sympathetic because Priscilla's also a new parent, and he knows what it's like to have a partner who struggles with a mental health disorder like Olive's struggle with addiction. Olive manages it better because she's not in such a publicly visible position, and she has more familial support.

Priscilla doesn't have anyone. Aside from Sol, she has no friends. Just blood ties and political allies. Brady becomes the first, and most unlikely, friendship in her adult life. It's very complicated and there's still a power imbalance there; he can't relate to her calculating nature and she does not understand his "golden sunshine, puppies-and-rainbows view on life," as she calls it lol. But the two greatly respect one another. Their talents and their intelligence. Were things different, and both had lived long enough, they might've become lifelong friends.

Brady disappears before Richie's exited toddlerhood, though. Priscilla's nowhere to be seen in NPMD. A lot happens in those few years after the Lauters' second campaign. But those are mysteries I'm aching to write stories for, so I think I'll keep the answers of said mysteries to myself for now.

In my hcs, Stephanie also starts showing symptoms of bipolar by her teenage years. It looks different, a little tamer, at first. Depressive episodes are mistaken for teen angst bedrotting, mania mistaken for being a party girl. Solomon sees what's happening though. He sees immediately. So she's on a mood stabilizer as early as sixteen.

She's told it's because she had seizures as a child and they could reoccur without management (and it would look true, as some BP meds overlap with meds treated for seizures). After high school, Stephanie learns it's not true. So she stops taking them. Her symptoms get bad. Depending on the timeline and what she's been through -- really bad. When she has friends behind her, though, and she has Pete, she learns to live with her disorder in a way Priscilla never got the chance.

It's painful to accept at first, but Steph ultimately is glad there's an answer to why her brain is such a painful and fucking scary place to live sometimes. She'll always wonder if her mother felt that way. No matter if her feelings on Priscilla are complicated and marred with resentment, she wishes she knew. Priscilla wishes she was there to tell her.

hades!solomon who has covered up the death of his late wife, persephone. since then he has kept steph!eurydice trapped in hatchetfield for half of the year and the black and white for the other half. no matter how hard she tries to escape the hold her father and the lords in black have on her, she can never truly escape.

orpheus!grace has always been fascinated with steph, since the were kids. she starts noticing how steph has become more and more of a shell of herself. she thinks it’s stranger, because steph is obviously very outspoken, but as the cold gets colder and the days go on, she’s more quiet.

grace being grace, tries desperately to fix the world, but specifically make steph happy. she makes a deal with the lords in black to bring back persephone back, because maybe that’s why steph is sad!

now it’s grace against all five lords in black + solomon lauter. steph finds out what she’s been doing and tries to stop her with the help of webby and others. is it too late? is steph’s soul already tied down forever?

(also a headcanon of mine has always been that steph’s mom’s name to be persephone so this works great for me)
