Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna is the most important and largest church of the city. The oldest part, remnants of its’ Romanesque predecessor, dates back to the first half of the 13th century. Building of the Gothic style church started around 1340 and lasted well into the early 16th century. In 1469 Saint Stephen’s was elevated from parish church to cathedral with the establishment of the Diocese of Vienna.
