Buddy reading Your House Will Pay with the lovely @keeperofpages was always going to be fun, like all our buddy reads. I’m so glad we chose this book to read together though as it gave us to much to talk about. The story covers two different families, Grace Park, a Korean-American woman who lives a sheltered existence with her family. Meanwhile, her sister Miriam is estranged from the family and Grace is trying to figure out why. Then we have Shawn Matthews, from an African-American family who is still grieving from the murder of his sister, Ava in the early nineties. His cousin, Ray has just been released from prison and is attempting to re-connect with his family, particularly his children after so many years away. There has also been a brutal killing of a black teenager by police which is forcing Shawn to re-visit painful memories. When another shocking crime occurs, the two families are thrown together in ways that change all their lives forever. There is so much going on in this novel and I loved how deftly the author switched between timelines and characters to illustrate the entire story. I found some characters more sympathetic and others that were more frustrating but it all made for some great discussion. Racial tensions and prejudice play a huge part in this compelling and intelligently written story. It is obvious we still have major problems around the world with racism and with violence and prejudice within the police force and the author captured this beautifully. We can clearly see the simmering, dangerous moments which come to a head and then boil over in a dramatic and explosive way. This is a memorable and important story that I’m so glad I picked up. I’ll definitely be looking for more from Steph Cha on the strength of this novel.
