Threadneedle was one of those books that I preordered and thought I would read “at some point” in the future. Thank goodness for @bristolianbooks and @dresses_and_covers for inviting me to buddy read it with them, I found it such a captivating story that I was delighted to have picked it up sooner than I anticipated. This novel is set in a contemporary but magical world where our female lead Anna, raised by her austere and cruel Aunt, is learning that what little magic powers she does possess should be bound as soon as possible to keep her and others round her safe. However, the arrival of Effie, Attis and some new friends at school show her that the magic powers that she has feared for so long can actually be the making of a whole new (and very exciting) life. This story has a very YA feel to it, particularly in the relationships that Anna forms with her friends at school but I really enjoyed the whole Mean Girls/The Craft vibe that it embodied. As Threadneedle is the first book in the Language of Magic series, there are moments where there are more questions than there are answers but as this is to be expected, I loved trying to work out what could happen next. If you can suspend your disbelief and appreciate this fantastical, witchy world that Cari Thomas has created, I think you will fall in love with the characters she has created and the imaginative plot. Yes, some parts may be slightly predictable and you might roll your eyes at a few decisions the characters make but I just loved this book for what it is - a damn good story.
