Dolittle (2020)

My rating: 4/10

Robert Downey Jr. puts on a dodgy accent and has a bunch of manpain about his dead wife, while around him CGI animals engage in shenanigans and fart jokes. All of these things do little (haw haw) to endear this thing to me.

Syriana premiered in New York City on 20 November 2005.

While working with Steven Soderbergh on Traffic (2000), Stephen Gaghan began working on a screenplay about America's dependence on foreign oil. After 9/11 he began researching the Middle East and the war on terror. In 2003 Soderbergh sent Gaghan a copy of See No Evil, a memoir by ex-CIA officer Robert Baer (Soderbergh would buy the film rights to the memoir), which became the basis of Syriana.

Gaghan did much research for the screenplay, including meeting with oil traders, lobbyists, sheiks, and suspected assassins. Once the screenplay was completed he decided to direct the film and offered Harrison Ford the role of Bob Barnes. Ford declined (later saying, "I made a mistake") and George Clooney was cast (Ford also turned down the lead in Traffic).

Syriana was a commercial and critical success and was featured on numerous year-end "best of" lists. It was nominated for 2 Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay. George Clooney received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
