Program: 40 Years / 40 Nights (Ace AIR) Location: Ace Hotel Pittsburgh Date of Stay: 6/19/16 Artist: Stephen Grebinski
Artist Stephen Grebinski decided to step outside of his room and make use of our gym to create this vintage-vibes video, in which a quartet of models take up various poses at the director’s request.
Stephen Grebinski is an artist working primarily with self-published books and zines, which are the result of an omnivorous photographic and archival practice. His printed work has been shown at Printed Matter, The New York Art Book Fair, The Bureau of General Services Queer Division, Art Metropole, and other institutions worldwide. His work tangles together queer bodies, architecture, and the persistent baroque impulses of desire. Existing somewhere between documentary and performance, these efforts are driven by an impulse to reveal and test the fractured, hidden world beneath our intentions and experiences. These images intersect and collide through brooks, multi layered screen prints, photographic installations, and video. After receiving his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, he is working and printing in Pittsburgh, where he publishes a monthly zine.
An Artists in Residence program sprang up at our New York property in 2014 and this year, we’re taking the concept on tour with our friends at Printed Matter, Inc. 40 Years / 40 Nights celebrates the institution’s 40th year by showcasing a new crop of 40 artists from around the world across 2016.
Printed Matter, Inc. is an independent 501©(3) non-profit organization founded in 1976 by artists and art workers with the mission to foster the appreciation, dissemination, and understanding of artists’ books and other artists’ publications. If in NYC, you can visit Printed Matter, Inc. itself at 231 11th Avenue. You can support Printed Matter in their 40th year by becoming a member today.
