Just made it to the end of chapter 1 of Dark Renaissance: The Dangerous Times and Fatal Genius of Shakespeare's Greatest Rival, and...

PROFESSOR GREENBLATT. DO YOU NEED A MUSICAL STING HERE!?

Like legitimately, this kind of massive claim is the sort of thing that would have gotten me AGGRESSIVELY pulled up short as an academic. Are we seriously crediting Kit Marlowe with single-handedly starting the English Renaissance!?!?!?!

No because why have I seen a review complaining that Dark Renaissance by Stephen Greenblatt talks a lot about Christopher Marlowe in terms of his influence on Shakespeare?? Like. You're upset that Stephen "is writing a seventh academic text about Shakespeare too many?" Greenblatt is talking about Shakespeare again? You picked up a book where Shakespeare is in the title and Marlowe isnt and you're simply shocked and appalled that there's a lot of stuff about how Marlowe was the radical transgressive who allowed Shakespeare to be popular??

I loved it honestly, the way Greenblatt got a lot of very probable narrative from not a lot of records. Like the buttery at Cambridge showing when Marlowe waa absent or possibly working. That's a very cool deduction. The later chapters where Greenblatt worked through each of Marlowe's major works were also great. Drawing connections between Faustus and late stage capitalism was bonkers, that took so much skill to pull off as deftly as Greenblatt did it. The way his death is referred to repeatedly was also really interesting. You never lose sight of what's coming, and yet it still feels like a shock when Greenblatt quotes the pretty blatant reference to Marlowe's death in As You Like It.

Can't wait to dig into this new biography that just came out today. Christopher Marlowe was an Elizabethan bad boy who lived a wild life and wrote great plays. He influenced William Shakespeare and was probably a spy for the queen. The biographer is the great Stephen Greenblatt who wrote The Swerve and Will in the World, two of my all-time favorite books.
