This is probably blasphemous of me to say, since I'm a Hellenist and not a Latinist, but I sometimes think that Lucretius' De Rerum Natura is the greatest poetic achievement of the ancient Mediterranean world. Every time I read it, I'm blown away by its beauty, intellectual rigor, and tremendous proselytizing zeal. It's like an earthquake in the brain.
The sum of things is ever being renewed, and mortals live dependent one upon another. Some nations increase, others diminish, and in a short space the generations of living creatures are changed and like runners pass on the torch of life.
