RIP MANI I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums e Movin’ On Up.
Gary “Mani” Mountfield, legendary bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, passed away on November 20, 2025, at the age of 63.
Mani leaves behind two 13-year-old twin sons from his marriage to Imelda Mountfield, who died in 2023.
I don't have to sell my soul
He's already in me
I don't need to sell my soul
He's already in me
I wanna be adored
I wanna be adored
He was preparing a talk tour about his life and career. Icons like Ian Brown (Stone Roses) and Liam Gallagher (Oasis) have already reacted with emotional tributes, calling him a "hero" and "brother."
The Stone Roses joined in 1987 and recorded the band's two iconic albums — The Stone Roses (1989) and Second Coming (1994).
Primal Scream joined in 1996 and played with them for 15 years, being a key part of the fusion of alternative rock and psychedelia.
Reunions returned to the Stone Roses in 2012 for a comeback tour, including historic shows at Wembley and Coachella.
Mani was a central figure in the Madchester scene, helping to define the British alternative sound of the 80s and 90s.
His pulsating bass gave body to the Stone Roses' hypnotic groove, influencing generations of bands.
In Primal Scream, he brought weight and depth to the psychedelic and electronic experimentation.
The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and me would have featured the Rocks hitmaker look back on his life and career, including the Stone Roses' legendary 1990 Spike Island gig.
Mani shot to fame with the Stone Roses but they went their separate ways in 1996 and he went on to join Primal Scream.
But in 2011, he announced he had left the band to reunite with the Stone Roses for a huge stadium tour.
Swastika Eyes
Your soul doesn't burn
You darken the sun you
Rain fire on everyone
Scabs, police, government thieves
Venal psychic amputees
Parasitic your syphilitic
Parasitic your syphilitic
I'm going to vent, I'm going to keep my dreams
My flesh, my bones, my soul, I possess them
My mind is a weapon immune to infection
Blood in my eyes, my vision is clear
Mani played bass on both of the band's studio albums, which defined the Madchester scene:
The Stone Roses (1987–1996; reunion in 2012)
I Wanna Be Adored (1989) – legendary opener with Mani's hypnotic bass
She Bangs the Drums (1989) – infectious groove that became an indie anthem
Made of Stone (1989) – melodic bass that sustains the track's melancholy
Fools Gold (1989) – minimalist funk bassline, central to the band's sound
Love Spreads (1994) – heavy bass riffs that mark the band's return
Ten Storey Love Song (1994) – smooth bass that accompanies the pop-psychedelic melody
With Primal Scream (1996–2011)
After the dissolution of the Stone Roses, Mani joined Primal Scream, expanding the band's sound Band:
Kowalski (1997, album Vanishing Point) – pulsating and experimental bass
Swastika Eyes (1999, album XTRMNTR) – aggressive and industrial groove
Shoot Speed/Kill Light (2000) – frenetic bass that drives the energy of the track
Movin’ On Up (live, 2000s) – Mani reinforced the classic gospel-rock with added weight
Accelerator (2000) – distorted bass that accompanies the band's sonic fury
