CONSPIROCY: BEHIND THE MUSIC - COLD WORDS (DOWNLOAD + LISTEN)
The idea behind "Cold Words" came from an idea I had to incorporate poetry into my song of slick talking. I just wanted something kind of "Jazzy" but not to "Old School" sounding so I dug through a few samples and it just so happens that I came across an Ohio Players sample. I called up one of my friends from High School who does poetry named LW. I asked him what he thought we needed for the track so that he could get his point across and he suggested exactly what I ended up rapping over. In the beat making process you can see me rhyming to a different tempo and actually making Cold Words from scratch.
The moment I found the tempo for Cold Words I knew the album was going to gel together. The swing I had on Cold Words is similar to what Ski Beats did on making the track for Jay-Z's "Dead Presidents." I sent the track to LW before I even had lyrics. Later on that day I realized I didn't want to do a hook so I added Richard Pryor and Red Fox a few days later after I came up with the bars that mentioned them. The ideas weren't really that random at all. Before rapping it was me snapping and joking with my older homeboys and that taught me how to be quick quick with slick or witty things to say. I never really relied on punchlines it was always about how I was able to make things sound witty and intelligent without it coming across to crazy. My goal was to make the verses different lengths. I think the verses ended up being 16, 12 & 20 which still equate to 48 bars.
There's also some footage of me creating the beat and the song "Cold Words." When it came time to shoot the video it really was about 30 degrees and @SteppIvy helped me shoot it between 6:30-7:30 A.M. on a Saturday morning in Canton, MD. That was the first video where I added other clips from other places. Also, it was my first time using Final Cut. I would say not bad for my first time around.
