Summary:
…the one where Derek caught Stiles wearing his sweater.
A cool breeze caressed Derek's face as he crossed the quad. It carried red, orange, and yellow leaves lazily toward the ground around him. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, loving the smell of fall. But then he was hit with an unmistakable scent hanging in the air. Its sweetness and warmth were so intense that it overpowered every other smell on campus, making Derek's knees weak—as it always did. And despite his efforts to keep his gaze straight as he walked to his next class, it was as if Derek were caught in a magnetic pull.
The sounds of idle chatter and the rustling of fallen leaves were drowned out as he found himself gravitating toward the familiar figure who shifted through the crowds, his playful smirk unmistakable.
Stiles.
Derek's chest tightened as he watched Stiles with Erica, the way he threw his head back and laughed at whatever she said. The sound floated across the quad like an enchanting melody. Time stood still as Derek continued to watch him.
God, Stiles was so beautiful. His eyes sparkled, reflecting the mirth and joy that his laugh had eluded—the type that spoke more than his words, infused with sincerity and a spirit that was both infectious and captivating. His hand went to his belly, rubbing slightly, and the movement tugged his sweater up, exposing his stomach.
Derek's mind almost short-circuited at the sight of all that creamy, white skin. But then he did a double-take, eyes drawn to the almost too-large maroon sweater Stiles had on. That sweater…it was his. Derek's. And it was as if Derek had no control over the wide smile that spread across his face, making his cheeks hurt.
Sure, they had mated; Derek could see the bright red bite mark peeking out from under Stiles's collar, an obvious claim that Stiles was his. But this was different somehow and seeing Stiles in his sweater, wearing it like a second skin, left a pleasant knot in Derek's stomach—his heart pounding with a rhythm only Stiles could set.
Especially when Stiles met Derek's gaze from across the quad, shooting him a cheeky grin followed by a wink. Derek bit back a groan, stamping down the flood of arousal that rushed through him.
All because of Stiles, who beckoned him over, and Derek couldn't help but move, tugged by an intensity that was all Stiles as happiness washed over him. Erica gave him a knowing smirk, waving before she sauntered off, leaving Stiles standing alone—with his radiant grin, all for Derek.
"Hey," Derek said when he was close, reaching out and trailing a finger down Stiles's chest, over the well-worn material. It was soft and thin, one of the reasons he wore it himself so often. "Nice sweater."
He tugged Stiles against him, breathing in his scent. It was now as distinctive as his personality, its sweetness mingling with the musk of Derek's sweater. The overwhelming scent of himself mixed with Stiles hit his nose, making him weak in the knees. The scent didn't seem out of place. Instead, it felt like it belonged there on him, representing the fusion of their lives, which still left Derek in awe, even after the past few months.
"Thanks." Stiles smiled, huffing out a laugh before a soft, contented sigh escaped him after he wrapped his arms around Derek's waist. His tone was teasing when he said, "Stole it from my boyfriend."
"Boyfriend? Sounds like a lucky guy." Derek chuckled, but the sound was muffled as he continued to breathe Stiles in.
"Mmm…" Stiles shook his head. "I think I'm the lucky one."
No, that wasn't true at all. Not when Stiles brought such joy to Derek's life. And it wasn't that Derek had been unhappy before. He had a pretty full life. Great family and friends, but Stiles completed him. He made everything feel right.
But before Derek could say any of that, Stiles added, "I was hoping to catch you between classes."
"Yeah?" Derek pulled back and kissed the tip of Stiles's nose. "Why's that?"
"Just wanted to see you," Stiles replied, a blush painting his cheeks a rosy hue, mirroring the warmth that radiated from him. His smile grew wider as he snuck a hand up Derek's back, dancing his fingers against the base of his neck, making Derek's breath hitch. There was a spark in Stiles's eyes, a look conveying so much without a single word. It was in those gazes that Derek found his home, their unspoken communication speaking volumes.
Stiles let out a silent laugh, his eyes crinkling with the mirth that Derek found enchanting. Captivating. "I missed you this morning."
Derek thought back on how he'd snuck out of bed for his eight a.m. class. He hadn't wanted to wake Stiles up since he'd looked far too adorable curled around his pillow, with dried drool on his face and his hair completely disheveled. All Derek had wanted to do was shut off his alarm and lay there, watching Stiles in such a peaceful state. But, unfortunately, he couldn't afford to miss his early morning lecture.
Speaking of classes, though, now wasn't the time for him to linger in the quad. His next class was starting soon, but Derek found himself rooted in place, hesitating to let go of Stiles.
"Want me to wake you up next time?" he asked, brushing a finger down the side of Stiles's face.
Stiles wrinkled his nose as if that idea sounded terrible. And of course it did. Who wanted to be woken up that early when they could sleep in? But then Stiles nodded. "I want to at least give you a proper goodbye."
Derek chuckled and leaned in, nuzzling into the crook of Stiles's neck. "Well, I'll remember that for next time. But I have to go."
He reluctantly let go, extracting himself from Stiles's arms, but then Stiles stood on his toes and planted the sweetest kiss on Derek's lips—the intimate gesture sent a thrill skimming down Derek's spine.
Stiles's hands were warm against Derek's chest, his smile infectious as he began backing away. "See you at home later. I put a roast in the crock pot for dinner. Should be done by the time your last class is done, so don't be late."
"Never," Derek said, catching Stiles's hand before he got too far and pressing a quick kiss to his knuckles before releasing him. "I love you."
"I love you, too," Stiles called out before jogging away and disappearing into the wall of students wandering through the quad.
As he turned and walked toward his next class, Derek touched his lips. His mind was still in the quad, tangled in Stiles's laughter and his scent, the sight of his sweater draped loosely over Stiles's form, his teasing smile, and the shared, unspoken moments between them.
With a quiet sigh, Derek reminded himself that he had a lecture to attend. So he half-heartedly trudged into the building, his heart still with Stiles—the image of him, rosy cheeks and all, in his sweater, imprinted in his mind.
