STEREK WEEK 2019: Day 1 - Mystery
The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Stiles and Derek’s Cat
Sterek Week 2019 • Mystery
Rating: T (for swearing and lite innuendo)
Word Count: 2.1 K
***********
Derek flips on his blinker, and the taxi driver riding his ass swerves around the Camaro, rolling down a window and shouting something indecipherable while Derek pulls into the fire lane in front of the airport. His sister walks through the automatic doors as he climbs out and pops the trunk, a parting blast of air conditioning blowing her dark shoulder-length hair around her head like a demonic halo. She’s dressed in an old band t-shirt with a black blazer layered over top, and ripped skinny jeans, one hand gripping the handle of her rolling luggage, the other pressing a ratty book to her chest.
“It seems stupid for a werewolf to be superstitious,” Cora greets, handing Derek the leather-bound album, “but I didn’t want to take the chance of it getting lost in the mail.”
He pulls her close in a one-armed hug; Cora was never the overly affectionate type, but distance and pseudo-death make the heart grow fonder. “I appreciate you lugging it all this way. Stiles has been asking me a lot of family questions since he started emissary training, and I wanted to put some faces to the names he’s been hearing.” Pictures that aren't attached to obituaries, he silently adds.
She tosses her suitcase into the trunk, dusty wheels leaving a streak of dirt across the upholstery, and slams it closed, climbing in through the passenger door Derek holds open. “Alpha Varela had a decent amount, and Alpha Ogden gave me a half-dozen,” she supplies as he slides behind the wheel and pulls out into traffic, “but they only fill up a quarter of the pages. It’s pretty pathetic.”
She reaches out a hand, lovingly runs fingers over the brown cover embossed with a triskelion.
“It is,” Derek concedes, “but it’s better than nothing.” His fingers itch to flip through the meager pages immediately, pour over the pictures like Cora’s been able to do, and bring his long-dead family back to life, but it will have to wait through rush hour traffic and a trip to the pet store. They’re out of cat food, and Agnes Nutter—the stray orange tabby Stiles fell in love with when he started spending so much time with Deaton at the vet clinic, and proceeded to drag home—has been known to take claws to the curtains, leather couches and freshly painted walls when dinner isn’t served on time.
“We’re back!” Derek calls through the front door an hour later, pulling his key out of the lock.
Cora drops two five-pound bags of dry food to the entry-way floor. “How much does this damn cat eat?” She laughs. Derek shrugs, wet food cans clanking in the bags hanging from his hands. The album is tucked securely under his armpit.
“I’m in the family room!” Comes Stiles’ disembodied voice. Derek detours to the kitchen to stock the cat food in the walk-in pantry and Cora heads to the back of the house to greet her brother-in-law. He’s only moments behind her, but when he finally rounds the corner into the family room, his little sister’s face is shifted, snarls twisting out of her throat through elongated teeth, and Stiles is sitting on the couch, eyes wide, laptop in one hand and the other raised, palm out, sparks sizzling along his fingertips. Acrid ozone spikes the air.
“What. The. Hell.”
“I don’t know, dude!” Stiles’ voice trills and Derek doesn’t have the time to admonish his husband for calling him dude. “She rolled in here and didn’t even say hello! Just went all grrrr-” his nose does the scrunchy little thing Derek secretly loves, top teeth bared like an adorably angry hamster- “and scared the shit out of me.”
“It’s that...thing,” Cora rasps, pointing a claw-tipped finger at Agnes Nutter, calmly lording over the room from Stiles’ blanketed lap, like a ginger queen on a throne.
Stiles drops his laptop to the couch cushion, wrapping his now free arm around Agnes, who’s yellow eyes squint in annoyance at the vigorous display of affectionate protection. “What’s your problem with my cat? Does the lupine-feline rivalry actually run that deep?”
“Really, Stiles? Dog jokes? Now?” Derek rubs at a tension headache brewing over his left eyebrow.
“Stiles,” Cora commands through sharp white teeth, “get away from it. It’s a demon.”
Agnes answers the accusation with a charming little “meow,” and rubs a paw over her docked left ear.
“Put your teeth away. She’s my pet!” Stiles shrieks.
“Derek. Get the photo album,” Cora orders.
Derek glances back toward the kitchen. He can see the book sitting on the granite countertop, but is loathe to leave the room. “Is this really the best time for a Hale family history lesson?”
“You bet your hairy ass it is. Go get those pictures. Now.”
Derek’s never been more grateful for supernatural speed. “Here.” He hands the album to his sister, who flips open to the second page, turns the book around and hands it back to him.
At first, Derek’s baffled. What do his unearthed family photos have to do with a c—
An orange and white striped cat that’s sitting on his grandmother’s lap, when she was roughly thirty years old. A cat that twists around his mother’s ankles as she stands on tip-toe to kiss his father on the cheek, while toddler Laura plays in the background. A cat that lingers behind his great-grandfather as he cuts the ribbon at the dedication ceremony for the Beacon Hills preserve. The last photo is in black and white, but this cat, like the others, has a docked left ear.
“Stiles…” Derek looks up at his husband. Agnes stares at him with slanted eyes. He does the math in his head. At least fifty years…

Stiles likes being Agent Stilinski. He likes the thrill of the chase and solving case after case. Turns out, no matter how much his praises are sung by his boss, he likes it too much for the HR department because he gets reluctantly ordered to take a holiday.
You can take the case away from the Stilinski but you can't take the case out of the Stilinski. Or something like that. Stiles does go on holiday. He just might have happened to pick a small town with the aesthetics of a low-budget horror film and four times the amount of missing persons per capita. No biggie. Besides, they have good local beers and a strangely adorable cryptid themed B&B. Stiles checks into The Mothman room and spends his evening drinking while he peruses digitized case-files with his tablet. But then he sees him and a chill goes down his spine as their eyes meet for a second. Then the man is gone, leaving only a nagging sense of recognition.
The bartender tells him the guy's nickname is Blue, he lives out of town in a small cabin by himself, and no one seems to know any more than that. Stiles scours his files for that face and eventually finds it - a much younger, hopeful version with eyes shining out in the photo: Derek Hale. Sole known survivor of a tragic house fire two states over and a decade ago, who disappeared days after, never to be seen again. Until now.
Stiles starts asking around and can't get a clear picture of who he is – half the town believes he's a dangerous lone wolf, and the other half appears indebted to him, convinced he's a man of few words but no shortage of heart.
A week's holiday changes into two, eagerly taken with flimsy excuses as to why. No one else knows what's gotten into him all of a sudden. Stiles never has been able to leave a mystery alone once he's stumbled onto it. He wants to know the truth and the only version of the truth that matters is the one he intends to coax from the wolf's mouth...
Sterek Week 2019 Day One: Mystery
Title: The Mystery of Derek Hale aka Screw You Scott
Summary: Something is going on with Stiles’ roommate, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.
Rating: G
AO3
----------
“You don’t understand, Scott,” Stiles hisses into his receiver. He’s laying on his bed glaring across the room as though that will be enough to somehow answer all of his questions. “There is something seriously wrong with him.”
Over the phone, Scott sighs. “Stiles, I think you’re over exaggerating. There’s nothing wrong with your roommate.”
Throwing his arm into the air in defeat, Stiles groans. “Aren’t you supposed to agree with everything I say? Isn’t that what best friends are for?”
When Scott laughs, Stiles’ scowls, though it’s more fond than threatening. “I don’t think it says anywhere in our friend contract that I have to agree with you when you’re being crazy.”
“Then we need to amend the contract immediately.”
There’s some shuffling from over the receiver as Scott bustles around. “Listen dude, I’m sure you’re just overthinking this because Derek isn’t me and you kind of resent him for it.”
That’s a low blow coming from Scott. They had been planning on being roommates for years before they started college. And then Scott decided that he wanted to take a year off before going back to school, leaving Stiles all alone to deal with a stranger. And yeah, maybe Scott would normally be right in his assumption. But he’s wrong about Derek. “No, Scott, listen-.”
“Stiles, I have work in an hour and I still have to shower. I can’t listen while you complain about Derek again. Just, get to know the guy. He’s probably not as bad as you think he is. Hell, you guys might get along so well that I’ll have to come down and kick his ass to defend my best friend title.” The image makes Stiles snort. There’s no way that soft, lovable Scott could take on all the muscles that Derek has. “Talk to him. I’ll call you later.”
“Yeah, okay.” He lets Scott hang up without protesting, then rolls over onto his back with a groan. Really, Scott doesn’t understand. He’s not being crazy. There are just too many things about Derek that Stiles can’t make sense of.
As though he was summoned from Stiles’ errant thoughts, the dorm door opens and Derek shoulders his way inside. He’s wearing his signature leather jacket over a grey Henley and jeans that are sinfully tight, and he looks good. He always looks good. It’s something that Stiles is still coming to terms with.
As soon as the door closes, Derek glances over at him. His nostrils flare as though he’s trying to sniff out an enemy, and Stiles closes his eyes. This is what he was trying to tell Scott. Derek does some really weird things, like relying on his sense of smell in a completely abnormal way.
“Hey,” he draws out the word, rolling over onto his side.
Derek has crossed the room and is standing at his desk, unloading a stack of books from his backpack. He glances over at Stiles, surprised that he’s talking to him. And okay, Stiles has never really tried to talk to him, not after Derek shut down any attempts at conversation while they were moving in by grunting in response to whatever Stiles said. But he’s still vaguely insulted by the confused tone Derek has in regards to a simple hello.
Still, he pushes on. “How’s it going?”
Derek narrows his eyes, staring at him for a long moment. “Fine.” His voice is curt, and Stiles thinks that will be the end of it. But then he asks, “How are you?” It sounds like a threat as much as a question, and Stiles wonders, not for the first time, why Derek seems so guarded.
He decides to be honest. “I’m already tired of general ed classes, and need to find the energy to finish my political science homework. But other than that I’m alright.”
Derek almost smiles, which makes Stiles’ heart thump uncomfortably. Then, as though he’s able to hear it, Derek tilts his head to the side and his smile falls away. “I’m going to the library,” he says, voice void of all emotion and inflection.
Stiles sighs. That was a fun conversation while it lasted. “Yeah, sure. Have fun.”
He closes his eyes again before Derek has a chance to do anything more than raise his eyebrows, and he doesn’t move until he hears Derek leave. As soon as the door clicks shut, Stiles rolls off the bed and settles in at his desk. Instead of pulling out his homework, he opens his notebook to a clean page and grabs his pen.
The Mystery of Derek Hale a.k.a. Screw You Scott
Can he actually smell well, or is it just a weird habit? Can I test this?
Seems to hate sunshine and everyday conversations
It’s not a lot, and Stiles feels a little bad about the second point, but he feels better about writing it down. Because Scott is wrong. Something is going on with Derek, and Stiles is going to get to the bottom of it.
Unsigned
Derek stopped at the top of his stairs as he spotted the vase of flowers. He knew without looking what the note said. He got the same one every year on this day.
Plucking the card from it’s stand, he smiled slightly.
This was the third year that he had received flowers on this day. The anniversary of the Hale fire. It meant a lot to Derek to know that someone was thinking of him and cared enough to reach out on such a difficult day.
The first year it had happened Derek had been shocked and nearly cried. He had hidden the flowers in his room to avoid questions from the pack.
The second year he set them out proudly on the kitchen table. Erica had been the only one to mention them, but Derek only shrugged making her drop the topic.
Both years the card was unsigned. Just the same message.
Just a reminder that you’re not alone.
The card remained unsigned this year as well, however, Derek was determined to find out who they were from.
He was sure it wasn’t anyone in the pack, as they had never mentioned the tragic event and Derek had never told them the date. They would have no way of knowing.
The alpha set the flowers on the kitchen table like he had the year before and pulled out his phone. There was only one person that he would trust to tell about this and that could help him find out who they were from.
-
Stiles hurried to swallow the mouth full of curly fries he’d just shoved in his mouth when he saw Derek’s name flashing across his screen.
“Hey, Der, what’s up?” He asked cheerily.
“Stiles, are you busy?” Derek asked, his tone sounding uncertain.
“Uh, no,” Stiles frowned, he didn’t like the way his alpha sounded. Of course, he shouldn’t have expected any less as he knew what today was, though he would never tell Derek.
“I need a favor.”
“Sure, what’s up?” Stiles would do anything to help Derek, especially today.
“Could you stop by the loft?”
Stiles stood up and grabbed his keys, “I’m leaving now.”
When Stiles arrived at Derek’s loft, he wasted no time with knocking. Derek expected the pack to come and go as they pleased, however, the door was locked when Stiles went to open it.
“Derek?” Stiles knocked, his tone full of worry.
A moment later the door opened.
“Sorry, I didn’t want anyone interrupting us,” Derek apologized.
Stiles’ scent must have spiked because Derek immediately reassured him, “Everything’s okay, I just want to talk to you about something and I don’t really want the rest of the pack to know.”
Stiles relaxed slightly, but the frown on his features remained.
“Come on, let me show you,” Derek lead Stiles to the kitchen after locking the door back.
Stiles stopped short when he saw the vase of flowers, he’d picked out that morning.
“Here,” Derek plucked the card he’d had made and handed to him.
Stiles already knew what it said but he couldn’t tell Derek that.
“That’s very…ominous,” Stiles handed the card back.
“It’s unsigned.”
Stiles only nodded.
“This is the third year and they’re always the same flowers.”
Stiles bit down on his lower lip as he tried to hold back a smile. He had spent weeks putting together the perfect bouquet the first year. He wanted flowers that represented Derek’s family.
There were Lilac’s to represent family. Violets to represent loyalty. Irises because they were Talia’s favorite. Daisies because they were Laura’s favorite. Lily’s in remembrance of Derek’s five-year old cousin Liliana, and lastly Gladiolus to signify strength.
“My mom was really big onto flower meanings, growing up she said it was important to know what each plant represented, and which ones were safe and dangerous.”
“That’s smart,” Stiles nodded. Trying not to give away too much.
“I need to know who these flowers are from; can you help me?” Derek gave Stiles a hopeful look.
Stiles’ head snapped towards Derek, “I’m sorry, what?”
“I need to know who sent these,” Derek repeated.
“I think if they wanted you to know then they would have signed the card,” Stiles gestured towards the card that was in Derek’s hand.
“Stiles, I don’t think you know how important this is to me.”
Stiles sputtered but didn’t have anything to say. Derek was right, he didn’t know how important it was to Derek.
“Do you not like them?” Stiles frowned at the vase on the table.
“I love them and that’s why I need to know who they were from,” Derek reached out and touched the petal of one of the Lilly’s.
“Oh,” Stiles swallowed. He could tell Derek, but the whole point was that he didn’t want Derek to know he knew.
“They’re for the anniversary of the fire,” Derek’s voice dropped as he avoided Stiles’ eyes.
Stiles licked at his bottom lip unsure of what to say. He would feel dumb pretending to not know what today was, but he also knew Derek didn’t want anyone to know.
“Stiles…” Derek glanced up at the abnormally quiet guy.
“Do you know who sent these?” Derek narrowed his eyes.
“What?” Stiles scoffed. “No.”
Derek straightened; his eyes boring into Stiles’. “You’re lying.”
“Damn you Werewolves,” Stiles threw his hands up.
“Stiles, did you know about today?” Derek demanded.
Once again Stiles was left to splutter unsure of what to say.
“Wait,” Derek’s demanding posture relaxed slightly, “They’re from you.”
Stiles’ tongue flicked out, anxiously wetting his lips. If he lied Derek would know.
“All this time, you knew?” Derek’s tone was gentler now, vulnerable.
“I knew you didn’t like making a big deal of it but I didn’t want you to think you were alone,” Stiles shrugged, his eyes dropping as if in shame.
“And the flower meanings?”
Stiles shrugged. “Remember when I found those dried flowers in that book forever ago? You said they belonged to Laura, they were her favorites. Cora had mentioned Irises being your mom’s favorite. And then Lily’s in remembrance of Liliana…” he trailed off almost afraid to continue when he saw the pain cross Derek’s face.
The alpha reached out stroking a petal gently. “Violet’s for Loyalty. Lilac’s for family. And Gladiolus for strength, right?”
Stiles only nodded.
“How did you know about Lily?”
“It was in the paper, the list of everyone who died inside. She was Peter’s daughter, right?” Stiles had never talked to Derek about the hale fire to this extent. It felt odd but he felt honored that Derek would talk to him at all.
“I don’t know what to say,” Derek’s jaw clenched.
Stiles couldn’t be sure if Derek was mad or not. His posture was tense, but his tone was soft.
“You don’t have to say anything,” Stiles shrugged.
“Thank you,” Derek looked up to meet Stiles’ gaze. His eyes were slightly glossy from unshed tears.
Stiles gave a sympathetic smile.
A banging at the door pulled Stiles and Derek’s attention.
“Hey, why’s the door locked,” Erica yelled before banging again.
“Coming,” Derek called as he went to step by Stiles. “Can we keep this between us? I like the pack not knowing the exact day,” he paused as Stiles’ side.
“Of course, Der,” Stiles grinned.
Derek felt relieved knowing who it was that was sending the flowers now and if he was being honest, he was glad it was Stiles.
The next year when Derek found the same flowers at his door, he smiled when he saw the name at the bottom of the card this time.
Consider buying me a coffee, I would really appreciate it!
Detective Stiles Stilinski and the Case of Derek Hale’s Mysterious Mate (1/1)
Read the fic on AO3
Summary: Mates are a thing. A werewolf thing. Which is fine and shit, but finding out that Derek fucking Hale has a mate? That gets to him. And seeing as Derek won’t tell him who it is, well… Guess that means this is a job for Detective Stiles Stilinski - if he’s not too distracted by his traditional banter with Derek.
AN: My first @sterekweek2019 fic, a mystery. For @christinesficrecs, for being the best moral support a girl can have when starting over like 3 times.
Preview:
So apparently werewolves have mates. Like, soulmates. Like, bonded for the rest of their life, living happily ever after, other half, two sides of the same coin, actual fucking soul mates. Stiles really doesn’t know how the discussion somehow got from the terrible werewolf knotting porn Erica was making fun of to a discussion of how mating is basically marriage plus. No divorce allowed - or even possible.
That and how the sex is so much better when you’re mated. Which is a thing he doesn’t think he’ll ever need to know (why would he?) - but it is also completely unsurprising that Erica still feels the need to share that information. There is a lot that can be said about his Catwoman, but her not being proud of the awesome partner she snared for herself is not one of them.
Erica and Boyd came back changed from their Alpha Pack kidnapping, having been forced to rely only on each other. They’d built a relationship in their months apart from the pack, and were now suddenly able to communicate without using actual words. They’d worked through their traumas side by side afterwards, with the support of their pack - Derek’s pack. It’s sort of Stiles’ pack too, though, by now.
He says sort of because well, he’s not in Beacon Hills that much anymore and his involvement in supernatural shenanigans has devolved into the occasional bit of tricky research using his dorm room’s annoyingly crappy WiFi.
Stiles Stilinski is almost normal now. And it’s so fucking boring, but no matter how much he pushes, Derek seems determined to keep him out of pack business. Because apparently school matters now, and there’s others who can pick up the slack.
Which, rude. He thought Derek and him had something special.
No, not like that. As if. He means an ally/frenemy type deal where they trust each other with their lives and know way too much about each other’s dark and dirty secrets, but they have no idea how to communicate without a supernatural crisis motivating them.
At least Derek’s a better Alpha these days. It only took him forever, but he’s managing. Stiles is close to graduating from college - that’s how long it’s taken him.
Okay, so maybe Stiles is a little impressed. A little.

Revenge of the Mystery Meat
Written for Day 1 of Sterekweek 2019: Mystery!
Stiles stares skeptically at the offerings of the cafeteria.
Tuesday is supposedly Italian day, but this doesn’t look like dolce vita or even Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love. It’s over cooked spaghetti and a sauce with mystery meat that is way more mystery than meat.
“Well, do you want anything or not now?” the bored lunch lady asks and Stiles watches as fly lands on the mystery meat and promptly disappears.
“No, thank you,” he replies and quickly leaves the queue. Looks like he’ll have to skip lunch today. Still better than being poisoned by the kitchen’s mystery meat, though.
His belly doesn’t seem to agree, choosing that moment to growl loudly.
Stiles quickly leaves the cafeteria before the mystery meat starts looking edible after all. Surely some fresh air is going to help - the stands tend to be empty at this time of day, so he should have them to himself.
Only when he gets there, it looks as though someone else has had the same idea. It’s Derek Hale, star of the basketball team and two grades above Stiles. He’s going to graduate this year and looks to be studying.
Biting his lip indecisively, Stiles is torn between sitting somewhere on the bleachers anyways - they are certainly big enough for two, or leaving Derek to it and trying to find some other secluded place on school grounds. Before he can come to a decision, though, Derek looks up and spots him.
“Stiles, hey! Come sit down!”
Derek Hale knows his name.
Stiles automatically makes his way over to Derek while that thought runs around in his head. He hadn’t thought Derek Hale knew his face, nevermind his name!
“How do you know my name?” is thus of course the first question that comes out of his mouth before his brain can come back online again and Stiles wishes the bleachers and the earth would swallow him up.
To his surprise, though, Derek doesn’t seem to mind.
“You’re on the Lacrosse team, aren’t you?” he asks and Stiles shrugs.
“Just as a benchwarmer really.”
“That still makes you part of the team,” Derek insists and then adds: “I try to know all the other teams of Beacon High.”
It’s plausible enough - Derek isn’t just the star player of the basketball team, but their captain, too. Perhaps that’s part of his duties - knowing the other teams. Though Stiles can’t see Jackson learning the names of basketball players two grades below them. And also, there’s this faint blush staining Derek’s cheeks and colouring his ears crimson that makes Stiles think it might not be the full truth.
Before he can dig any deeper, though, his stomach pipes up again. The growl is even louder this time, and now it’s Stiles’ turn to feel his face heat up in embarrassment.
“Skipped lunch today?” Derek asks, biting back a smile. Stiles is just grateful he hasn’t outright laughed.
“Today’s Italian Day, though really, they should just go ahead and call it Mystery Meat Day; and leave it like that,” Stiles complains and Derek laughs.
“I do avoid the cafeteria on Tuesdays for a reason - seriously, what do they put in there? And how long ago?”
“Yeah, you never know when it’s going to start walking again,” Stiles jokes.
”Tuesday Lunch: The Revenge of the Mystery Meat,” Derek intones dramatically and Stiles laughs out loud.
Unfortunately the movement makes his stomach complain again. Loudly.
“Here.” Derek has suddenly got a sandwich out and is offering half of it to Stiles. “We can’t have you be the first indirect victim of The Mystery Meat, can we?”
It’s a nice sandwich, too, not one of the tasteless store-bought ones, but homemade, with thick slices of bread and even plenty of greens between them.
“Are you sure?” Stiles asks, even as his stomach insists again loudly that it needs to be fed now.
“Take it,” Derek urges, adding: “I’m not all that hungry anyways.”
A growl from his belly immediately proves him a liar and Stiles tracks how the blush darkens, starting with Derek’s ears and moving to his cheeks and even a little onto his nose. Ducking his head in embarrassment only serves to reveal that the back of his neck is red, too.
Derek’s obvious embarrassment is enough for Stiles to overcome his own jitters, though, and so, with his heart in his throat and almost unable to believe his own chutzpah, he returns:
“Let me repay you though: dinner? Tonight?”
Derek presses half of the sandwich into his hands and grins, cheeks still flushed, but more from excitement than embarrassment now, it seems.
“It’s a date. As long as there’s no mystery meat!”
And that’s how Stiles accidentally almost became a vegetarian.
Oh, and got a boyfriend on the way.
Looks like the mystery meat was good for something after all.
