Favourite things: Greece
Watch my dance - Loukas Yiorkas ft Stereo Mike
Greece arrived at Eurovision in 1974 and for the most part had songs with traditional sounding instruments. They had several years in the top 10 and a few near the middle not really troubling the bottom too much. The 2000 years were dynamite for the Greeks who qualified for the finals each year from 2004 to 2015. The wheel then fell off a bit.
When looking for a favourite I was a bit swayed by things. I chose Watch my dance because of a fusion of traditional with modern, good and bad, day and night. Does it fit together well? Maybe not so much, but I like each of the performances individually. I like the presentation of the Greek dance as well, it makes me sentimental.
2010s Eurovision: 389-386
389. Loukas Giorkas ft. Stereo Mike - “Watch my dance” Greece 2011
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 They should’ve just billed this song as “Stereo Mike ft. Loukas” because MORE THAN TWO THIRDS OF THIS SONG CONSISTS OF STEREO MIKE TERRORIZING US WITH ATROCIOUS RAPPING. Like seriously, I shit on white-guy rapping a lot but this is the fucking reason it shouldn’t happen again, EVER. The other 27 or whatever percent of the song consists of Loukas repeating the same three sentences about 5 times throughout the song.
And by all good 2011 traditions, it finished in 7th place, somehow. 🙃 Why was this year beloved again?
388. Maria Olafs - “Unbroken” Iceland 2015
Oh look an OGAE fan flop! I could end the write-up there, you know, but this song is WAY worse than it’s being given credit for. Allow me to ruin it forever by pointing out that “Unbroken” has NO VERSES!! That’s right, this song is 100% chorus, pre-chorus and post-chorus. NO VERSES!!! Also, “Unbroken” is not a word, missy! Whatever, the unsong with the broken untitle is repetitive and stupid, so of course it ensnared the unhearts of all the OGAE unintellectuals. 🙄
Ununfortunately Maria underscored her song’s doubleplus ungoodness by deilvering an performance so offkey Europe was like “ugh retire bitch 🙄” and proactively unqualified Iceland from the next three Finals. Her unpower. 👣
387. Rykka - “The last of our kind” Switzerland 2016
Fun fact: whenever I (re)watch a year of Eurovision, I always rewatch The Last of Our Kind first. It really is a testemony to Rykka’s shitness that she always makes *anything* look and sound good by comparison. 🤗
Having said that, this is ONLY possible because “The Last of Our Kind” is so incompetent it becomes frustrating and painful to watch. Rykka should have been the first entrant to score negative points in a tally to really cement her as ~The Last Of Her Loserkind~ and then it might’ve endeared her enough for me to grant her a fusedmarcesque Cult Status, but alas. 🙄
386. Josh Dubovie - “That sounds good to me” United Kingdom 2010
Ahhhh that time when the UK finished last for being shit and as punishement for the Brexit. Good times. 😎 And with that, every year has now lost an entrant! Yay! I’m surprised I even have Josh that high, lol? I mean, he *AND* his song are obviously terrible and embarassing, but he doesn’t exactly linger on my mind as “ZOMG GODAWFUL” even though he is? Perhaps it’s because I just sat through Rykka again? Even when I rank him this low it is not as ‘A TERRIBLE ENTRY I HAVE A BURNING HATRED FOR’... mostly because my feelings amount to immensely deep pity and extreme physical discomfort as opposed to hate? Progress, I suppose.
How would you rank the Greek male representatives from 2001 to 2019?
From the best to the less handsome. Easy win for Loucas :)
