Other Steve comes home
Me: Now you can go to games.
Brother: Oh yeah. I wonder if he can take over the vacancy as the manager of the USMNT.
Man of the Match, 1930
My brother misses Steve Cherundolo.
Brother: This game is 2-0 with Cherundolo.
Me: Apparently, we haven't kept a clean sheet in the first match of a World Cup since 1930. The first World Cup.
Brother: Cherundolo was the Man of the Match in that game.
Me: I'm imagining it's like Jack Nicholson inexplicably showing up in the Overlook Hotel photo in 1921 in The Shining.
Honoring the Mayor of Hannover

After 15 years, Hannover 96 and USMNT right back Steve Cherundolo has announced his retirement at the age of 35. Having battled knee injury after knee injury for more than a year, Cherundolo said that was one of the biggest reasons he decided to hang up the boots. Cherundolo leaves his professional career behind with 87 international appearances and 370 league appearances with Hannover, 302 of them in the Bundesliga, most of any Hannover player. Cherundolo will be an assistant coach for Hannover's U-23 team.
Highly underrated during his playing career, established himself as an incredibly reliable defender at the club and international level and always received applause for his vision on the field and his professionalism. His consistent showings made him an easy leader of any back line. His leadership abilities were made more official when he was named Hannover captain right before the 2010/2011 Bundesliga season.
Cherundolo has had one of the greatest careers of any American in Europe, recording all club appearances with Hannover, and being one of the team's most important players for almost all of his 15 year career. He was also a three time World Cup veteran, going to the 2002, 2006, and 2010 World Cups.
Cherundolo, known for his positive nature, said in his press conference today that he has "had a great long career and the glass is half full." I'd say that for the guy whose "last touch as a professional footballer" was nutmegging teammate Szabolcs Huszti, the glass is closer to completely full than half full. Congratulations on a wonderful career, Steve, and I wish you many successes in your future.
Danke Dolo
