When Top Of The Pops came to Brum - and Liam Gallagher ruined his recording

In 1999, a very special TV show rolled up into Birmingham city centre. They set up shop at The Dome nightclub, and waited for their stars and audience to arrive. It was Top Of The Pops, the long-running chart music show that had been broadcast weekly since 1964. For the vast majority of that time, they'd filmed it in studios in London, but in 1999 they took the show on the road. Throughout August, September and October that year, they went from Edinburgh to Brighton, Swansea to Newcastle, Liverpool to Nottingham and more. As our date closed in, we wondered what celebrities the charts would bring to Birmingham. The Gallaghers were giving their first performance since some of the original members of Oasis left the band earlier that year. "Both looked much smaller than their TV personas suggested", wrote the Post reporter who went along. Liam Gallagher ended up causing the first problem of the day, forcing a reshoot. He was caught swigging from a beer bottle while they and Steve Craddock performed The Jam's Carnation, but alcohol and cigarettes weren't allowed to be seen in the show.
