Start The Week With Music ...

... from a world in which you are not judged by where you come from, what the color of your skin is or what God, if any, you believe in. There is no room here for hatred or racism, you will find in this world no fascists and no cowardly murderers. It celebrates diversity and asks only that your mind should seek beauty, your heart be caring, and your spirit wide awake.

Here, then, are three musicians who combine musical elements from different traditions to create an original, rich sound full of power and poetry. The influences range from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus Mountains via Western Europe and Northern Africa all the way to the Middle East and beyond.

The members of the Hadouk Trio are Didier Malherbe from France who plays wind instruments, most notably the Doudouk, an Armenian oboe made of apricot wood; French born Tunisian resident Loy Ehrlich on keyboards; and percussionist Steve Shehan, the American son of an Indian father and a French mother.

I am posting an entire album of theirs, called Now. It was originally released in 2002 (Melodie 670392) and is now available from Naïve/Naïve Jazz ND 68530.

Steve Shehan - Arrows (Made to Measure Vol.26) - remastered reissue of 1990 album, a percussion-rich Fourth World affair

Born in the US (of a Native American father and a French mother), composer and musician Steve Shehan has travelled around the world, collecting instruments and sounds along the way, making extended stays in Asia, South America and Africa, and initiating long-term collaborations with artists such as the late Tuareg musician Baly Othmani. Steve is also a member of Hadouk Trio (alongside Didier Malherbe -of Gong fame- and Loy Ehrlich). A much-in-demand percussionist, he has collaborated with a host of artists (from Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Khaled to Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, Rokia Traoré, Carla Bruni, Nitin Sawhney and John McLaughlin). Steve has recorded many albums of his own music, and Arrows -which came out on Crammed's Made To Measure series in 1990- was his first solo record. A mesmerising ambient global journey with jazz overtones, laced with Steve’s own field recordings made in Bali, Turkey, Kenya, Morocco and India, Arrows has elicited comparisons with the work of Jon Hassell and other ‘fourth world’ explorers. Most of Arrows was recorded in Paris by Steve Shehan. The 7 compositions feature him performing on thirty-five instruments (including derbouka, caxixi, afuche, cymbals, glasses, ikembe, sanza, Malaysian, balinese and thai gongs, djembe, angklung, balafon, koto, gender, kendang, terompong, bells, Armenian tar, surdo, keyboards, congas, steel drums, vibes, sticks, cuica, sitar, kodo, udu & hadgini drums, octoban, Baschet structures, sampled sounds, bass, concert piano, electric guitar). Only a couple of guests appeared, including his friend Richard Horowitz on flutes (Steve had participated in the recording of Horowitz & Sussan Deyhim’s Desert Equations album, which is how he & Crammed Discs first met). A multitude of musical heritages came together on Assarouf, the 1997 collaborative album by Steve Shehan and Baly Mebarek Othmani. The partnership represented everything from Shehan's Cherokee and Irish heritage to Othmani's ancestral roots in nomadic Tuarege. Shehan, who speaks at least 14 languages and plays over 500 percussion instruments, as well as flamenco and jazz guitar, keyboards, bass and piano, is best known as the producer or co-producer of more than 200 albums including recordings by Brian Eno, the Gypsy Kings, Vangelis and Herbie Hancock. Algeria-born Othmani, who plays the oud, sings in the ancient language of Tamachek. Together, the duo created a sound that fused their diverse backgrounds. ~ Craig Harris...~ "Assikel, from Bali to Baly" is the illustration in music and images of Steve Shehan's journey from Bali, the Indonesian Island to Baly, the 'blue man', seeking his identity.Music is the encounter between instruments that emphasize a different approach of the freedom to create going beyond the traditional limits of belonging. Baly passed away June 18th 2005. It is as an homage to his souvenir and to fulfill his dream and his commitment that Steve Shehan decided to produce this new album, a tribute to this great poet of the desert. The documentary movie retraces a quest for identity, achieved through and thanks to music.Shot in the Sahara, in Paris and in New York, containing numerous archive materials, this documentary includes about twenty testimonies of individuals who met and influenced Steve Shehan's life one way or another....~ After "Assouf" (nostalgia) and "Assarouf" (forgiveness), here is "Assikel from Bali to Baly" (meaning "the trip" in Tamahaq, dialect spoken and written by the Tuaregs), here is the third part of the trilogy designed by Steve Shehan and Baly Othmani.
