The quality of Steven's work has led to commissions for publications such as Computer Arts, The New York Times and Wired in addition to global brands including Nike, Audi, Coca-Cola and Diesel. With a strong passion for typography he has also developed his own font, Muirside, for Hype for Type.
— The Art Book
This image was completed during some downtime a few years ago as part of a competition to design the cover of The Art Book. My agents had come to me with the idea of entering as it was only open to represented illustrators.
I was going through a transitional phase with my lettering at the time and had been looking for an excuse to experiment a little with my style, moving it on and making it a little more pictorial. I'd been looking back at my earlier influences, and wanted to digitally replicate the feeling of working with an airbrush, which was something I had tinkered with back in my student days. >>
I started sketching letters, focussing on the 'A' for Art Book, for no other reason than it seemed a good starting point and good place to 'warm up'. After drawing some really quick lower case versions, I noticed that one of them looked vaguely like a penguin, and decided to run with it, seeing where it would take me. I worked it up in Illustrator first, then used the shapes I drew there as masks to airbrush in Photoshop. >>
To my shock, it actually won the competition that year, and despite me feeling personally that it's now a bit of a naive image, it remains the illustration referenced most by clients from my portfolio. It marked a turning point in my career, helping me forge new techniques I still use every day, and launched one of my most popular styles. If I were to recreate the piece today the result would be very different, but I would not swap it for the world. ∎
