This is the act one finale of Heading East, and a lot is going on here. Siu Yee and Lee Fung’s relationship falls apart as they clash over how to raise their son, and the recent announcement of Japanese internment. The scene is underscored by a torch ballad from a minor character, a Chinese nightclub singer who is secretly Japanese. I love it because tensions just come to such a huge boil and everything just collides so perfectly before the curtain.
Plus it’s a really good song.
