Grace of Monaco: An Interpretive Biography by Steven Englund (1984)

Grace of Monaco by Steven Englund

Help me out, friends. I found this book in hardback (v. good condition) at an antique store close to my house for $10. Should I get it? Have any of you read this biography on Grace?

It would thus not be Napoleon's famous "realism" that failed him, nor still that he had succumbed into (re)becoming a Jacobin ideologue, even if he could play that part when it suited him. It is, rather, that Spain surprised Europe and herself, and the only person she would not have surprised was a certain young General Bonaparte, who warned in 1794 that a land war in Spain was unwinnable due to the national uprising it might cause. But he not longer existed, at least for now.

Steven Englund about the Peninsular War (or, from Spanish point of view, War of Independence). Napoleon. A political life. Not sure about what he means with the Jacobin part. Also, is not that surprising when one knows for example how much time the Romans spent in the conquest of Hispania (the name they gave to the whole Iberian Peninsula). Two centuries. Or how much time the Christians persevered in their Reconquista. Eight centuries.

"Napoleon, A Political Life" By Steven Englund.

It is going to be my target to read this "sophisticated and masterly biography" next week. If you have already read it I would be interested to hear what you think of it, because I intend on using it for part of the evidence for my A2 history coursework. Englund better not let me down.
