Steve actually takes school pretty seriously in my mind, he knows he'll never go to college because of his dad and just generally thinks he'd never be good enough. But graduating is still so important to him, just so he can prove he can do it. He's not as serious about it as Darry or Ponyboy, and definitely doesn't tell people he cares. But Soda could always tell when he was beyond cooked because Steve would actually spend the period doing his work instead of goofing off. No matter how hard he tried, he could not distract that man when those final weeks of the semester hit. Steve also gave Soda answers btw, in his mind he was doing the work either way, and this way his best friend was less likely to drop out. He helps Soda study when he decides to get his GED
