You sat in the conference room, bored out of your wits, sitting through yet another briefing. You scribbled in your notebook, zoning in and out of consciousness. Wanda nudged you with her elbow, saving your head from smacking into the table. You mouthed the words “Thank you” to Wanda, and tried to regain your focus. When you finally lifted your gaze back to Steve, who was no longer talking, he was just staring... at you. You looked around the room, and everyone was looking at you. It suddenly occurred to you, that you had missed something important in the conversation.
Fuck.
The rest of the debrief was awkward, full of side glances-more like glares- from Steve, you tried your best to remain focused and attentive.
“You all are dismissed. Except you Y/n.”
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes in annoyance. It was like Steve was your teacher and you were the bad student that didn’t do their homework and had to stay for that awful lecture after class. You didn’t bother moving from your seat. You crossed you leg over your knee, resting your clasped hands in your lap.
“What did I do this time Cap, sir?” Your time was laced with sarcasm and annoyance as you looked up to me his eyes.
Steve seated himself on the table in front of you, one foot still firm on the ground. The sleeves of his form fitting black T-shirt scrunched as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Is every a joke with you y/n?”
“Yes.”
“Please be serious for a second y/n. Please.”
You shifted in your seat, uncomfortable with this sudden change in mood. A serious demeanor wasn’t really your forte.
“You can’t keep goofing off during debriefings. They are important.”
“I know steve. But that doesn’t change your boring it is.”
“Are you saying I’m boring?”
“Not you per say-although, I will admit, you’re kind of a kill joy- but yes.”
Steve effortlessly pushed himself from the table. For as bulky as he was, he moved rather gracefully, so light in his feet.
“Please, just pay attention and do not doze off from now on, or you won’t be going on anymore missions. Are we clear?”
“Roger that.”
Steve’s eyes glistened with vexation, as you left the room. You chuckled lightly as you rose from your seat. It was your favorite line to use with him, and you just couldn’t help yourself.
After such a long debriefing, you felt the need for a freshly brewed cold press. You threw on a light hoodie and windbreaker, grabbed a few loose bills from your wallet, heading to your current favorite coffee shop, just around the corner.
The fringed air stung at the exposed skin of your cheeks and nose. You pulled your hood over your head, tucking your hands into the pocket of your jacket. The loud crunch of stiff snow, crackled beneath your converse as your pace turned into a brisk jog. The things you did for good coffee.
It felt good to be alone. Sure, you had time to yourself at the tower, but here, you were alone amongst strangers and it was surprisingly peaceful. You felt like you could breathe again.
“What can I get for you this evening?” The soft mousy voice of a young girl drew you from your daze.
“Oh um, yes. Can I get a large cold press with coconut milk, 2 shots of caramel and a shot of espresso please.”
Coffee in hand, you took a seat in a worn comfy leather chair located in the front corner of the coffee shop. You leisurely sipped your coffee, people watching. You peered our the large store front window. Fresh feathery snow that fell sparkled against the strings of decorative holiday lights that adorned the buildings and street lamps, as hoards of people and cars filled the streets, one you noticed in particular.
It was nearly dusk, but you could see him clearly. He was fairly tall with a large build, and piercing blue eyes locked with yours, from across the way. A chill rushed through your body, as his lips formed into a grin of pure malice. You were petrified when you realized why you recognized his face. He was HYDRA. HYDRA’s greatest asset. The one that had nearly gotten your father, the one that cost him his life.
The Winter soldier.
