Avengers Tower – July 12th, 2015
"Can you hand me that Allen wrench?" Tony asks me as I pace back and forth staring at a set of blueprints I had in my hands. Without looking from my blueprints I wave my hand making his Allen wrench set float over to him, I then reach my hand back up to play with my Adamantium Necklace. It had been a gift from my father, James Howlett. It was a beautiful metal chain with a whole Adamantium heart that had the engraving 'Always Keep Fighting' etched atop it and on the other side was my birthday. July 17th 1990.
"Thanks," he says waving them at me.
"No problem," I say as I narrow my eyes at the papers in front of me. I had known Tony for most of my life considering my father was Wolverine. Everyone wanted to get their hands on my father's DNA which I had been lucky enough to inherit. GO ME! Surprisingly when my mother had died Tony had offered to take me in. Well mostly Pepper had but either way I ended up living with a Stark.
He helped me through college and after that I had joined SHIELD as one of its head scientists. Tony wasn't happy about that but I had wanted to help the world. That was until HYDRA revealed themselves and I was on the top of their most wanted lists. Thank god for Tony Stark then. He hid me until it was deemed safe for me to live alone. After the fall of Shield I had moved into a new apartment and decided to start living my life that was until I ate some fish oil pills then I realized I was an Inhuman. That was over a year ago.
A week ago Tony had had the bright idea to create a time machine and let's just say since I was a physicist studying the theory of Special Relativity; I had been dragged into his office to help. I have only been here a week but tony and I have covered so much ground. "So you sure you don't want to make the time machine out of a delorean?" I ask as I set the blueprints down on a nearby table.
"I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that." He replies not looking at me.
"So when are you gonna tell everyone what we're actually doing down here?"
"Of course," I say rolling my eyes and glancing over at the elevator. "You know it's getting harder and harder to lie about why I'm here."
"Nonsense, you're an inhuman who just happens to be a physicist. As far as they know you're here for back up and you're helping me tweak my machines."
"Like you need help." I say offering him a playful smile. He smiles at me and I walk closer to him and leaning over his shoulder say, "So who gets to try this baby out first?"
"Naturally I do," he says and I roll my eyes.
"That's no fair," I reply as I frown at him.
"What, the inventor always has to be the first one to try out his inventions,"
"But I helped you Tony, don't forget that."
"Alright after the party tonight we'll both try it out okay, now give me your hand." He says and I oblige holding my hand out to him as he pulls out a needle gun and injects something into my arm.
"AGH! JESUS CHRIST TONY!" I yell out as I jerk my arm back from him making my skin turn to fire. I quickly take a deep breath as I try to keep my clothes from burning off. Oh did I forget to mention that I have elemental abilities? Yeah, I can control any and all elements. It all started a few months ago when I went to take some of my fish oil pills and ended up almost burning down half of Manhattan. Thank you Inhumans! I would have caused more damage if Tony hadn't shown up and taught me to how to control my abilities.
"What, I was just injecting one of the destination controllers into your DNA so all you gotta do is," he grabs my arm and after he flicks my wrist little numbers appear and he smirks. "See now when we go back in time no matter when or where we can always get back."
"Good, but next time warn someone when you're gonna inject them with something okay?"
"I'll try to remember." He says as switches out the needles before injecting the other controller in his arm.
"Miss Howlett, Captain Rogers wishes to speak with you in the common room," FRIDAY calls out making me jump slightly before replying, "Tell him I'm on my way."
"Of course," FRIDAY replies and I slowly turn toward Tony who was still tinkering with the device.
"Please don't activate it yet," I say as I narrow my eyes at him, "I'd hate to be in mid conversation with Steve and then just poof," I mimic an explosion with my hands making a playful light fills his eyes. "I mean it Tony, or I'll tell Pepper on you."
"Fine..." He drags out the word as he sets the tools down and walks over to the elevator with me. Upon reaching it he turns to me and says, "So, you and Capsicle?"
"What?" I ask as confusion fills my eyes.
"You two, you know?" He says as he winks and I instantly shake my head.
"No, of course not; wait that came out wrong." I rub my forehead as he starts laughing at me. "Shut up Tony!" I yell out and folding my arms over my chest, my body temperature starts to heat up.
"Alright Jen, dammit turn the heat off!" He cries out as he takes a few steps away from me. I look down to see my clothes sizzling and I take a deep breath making my core temperature turn colder.
"Sorry," I say apologetically as the elevator opens.
"It's okay, just please refrain from any angry or sad thoughts while riding in the elevator. You remember what happened last time." He says and I nod the memory filling my mind. I had gotten a little angry with my now Ex- boyfriend Johnny Storm and went full flame; and Friday had used a fire extinguisher to cool me down. Yes ladies and gents I dated the human torch, for like a month before I decided to call it off. Not a favorite memory of mine. Cracking my knuckles I turn back to Tony and say, "What did you mean though?"
"Just notice the little things, the looks, the," He clears his throat before continuing, "Temperature changes,"
"Seriously? Do I really make it that obvious?" I ask as I stare ahead of me at the closed elevator doors.
"Sometimes," He says smirking. "Honestly though why haven't you asked him out?"
"I don't know, it just feels off you know?"
"No, I don't know. Elaborate?"
"I don't know, just a weird feeling I have." I say as I let out a heavy sigh. "I'll ask him one day, I just don't know when."
"Well either you ask him out or I'll ask him for you."
"What about Pepper?" I joke and he rolls his eyes.
"Ha, ha, ha, very funny Jen." He says as the elevator doors open to reveal all of the Avengers sitting around a huge round table talking back and forth. When they see the two of us though they instantly quieten. "Don't stop on our account," Tony says as he pats my shoulder before making a beeline for the bar.
"Jen, nice of you to join us." Steve says sternly and I know I'm in trouble, but for what I'm not exactly sure.
"Um, what did I do?" I ask as I slowly walk up to the table my eyes focused on him.
"Nothing, we just needed your input on something." Natasha says and I slowly look at her and nod.
"Okay, yeah sure, what do you need?"
"What do you see here?" She asks as she makes a picture appear on the hologram. I instantly let out a heavy sigh.
"Me and Tony, working on our invention." I say as I fold my arms over my chest.
"And what invention would that be?" Steve says and I raise an eyebrow.
"Sorry Cap, that's classified." I reply sarcastically making Steve stand up straight.
"Nothing's classified from the team," Steve says angrily and I take a step back.
"Well I'm not part of the team now am i?" I growl out as I narrow my eyes at him. He had made it very clear the last time we had been on a mission together. His reasoning was he didn't want me to get hurt. I called Bullshit.
"What Steve means to say is, you've been here for a while now and the rest of us already feel like you're a part of our team. That's why we can't understand why you would hide something from us." Nat says and I grit my teeth. I hated lying, especially since I had been lied to most my life; but to hear it from Nat, it hit me like a Mack truck.
"TONY!" I yell out as fire fills my eyes.
"Yeah, yeah, hold onto your panties." He says as he enters the room. He looks over at us and stops dead in his tracks. "Whatever it is I didn't do it."
"This device?" Steve says as he turns from me to Tony.
"Ah yes that, we, and by we I mean Fireball and I, invented a Time Machine." Tony says nonchalantly making the room erupt in worried conversations.
"What were you thinking?" Steve asks his voice deep and demanding.
"I had a week free and so did Jen so I called her in to help me, she is after all a genius like me." Tony replies with a smirk.
"That's not what I meant Stark and you know it."
"Look, I don't see what the problem is."
"What if it falls into the wrong hands?"
"Well it'd have to work first." I interject sarcastically making Steve glare at me.
"Whether it works or not isn't the problem, the fact that it exists is a hazard to national security." Steve retorts and I roll my eyes.
"Like I said golden boy," I say as I slowly stomp over to him my anger surging through my body making my fire whip through my hair. "It doesn't work!"
"Actually Jen," Stark interjects and my head jerks toward him. "It does work, why did you think I injected us with the controls?"
"God dammit Tony!" I yell out as I unconsciously send a fireball his way. He instantly ducks making the fireball soar over his head and my eyes widen. "Oh I didn't mean-"
"Take a walk Jen," Steve orders and I glare at him.
"Don't tell me what to do," I retort angrily, "You're not my father."
"No but he isn't here is he." Steve says dryly and my heart clenches.
"You're right Steve," I say as I hold back tears. "He's not." I quickly turn and start to walk out of the room when I hear Nat say, "Way to go Rogers, you know how their relationship is." I stop just out of eyeshot and listen to their conversation.
"I didn't mean it like that," Steve says as he lets out a heavy sigh.
"I think you owe her an apology," Wanda says in her thick Sokovian accent and I smirk softly. Ever since Wanda and I had met she had become like an older sister to me.
"I agree," Tony says and I roll my eyes.
"No one asked you Stark," Steve replies making my chuckle slightly.
"I agree with Wanda, Rogers," I hear Nat say again and I lean back against the wall and take a deep breath. "Go apologize before she freezes all of Manhattan."
"Right," Steve says as I hear his footsteps start toward me. I start to walk away again and almost reach the elevator when Steve calls out my name making me stop in my tracks. Turning toward him I see a look of regret fill his eyes and I take a deep breath. "Look Jen, I'm sorry," He says and I raise an eyebrow. "I shouldn't have said what I did about your dad."
"Yeah you shouldn't have." I say sternly as I fold my arms over my chest. "But you're right. I should have said something about what Tony and I were doing."
"So we were both in the wrong." He says smirking and I roll my eyes as a slight smile covers my lips.
"Yeah," he says as he smiles softly at me making my heart rise in my chest. Most of our conversations would start out as arguments then turn soft like just now. I don't know why but it just felt normal. I figured it had something to do with the fact that he and my ex-boyfriend Johnny looked so similar. "Jen why were you building a time machine?" He asks and my heart drops.
"No reason," I say as I look away from him.
"Come on," he says as he closes the distance between us. I glance up at him with emotionless eyes as he says, "I know you," he says reaching up and placing his hands on my shoulders. "You wouldn't have agreed unless there was a good enough reason. So?"
"I.." I start to say before letting out a heavy sigh. "I wanted to see my mother again. Even if she didn't know it was me. I wanted to see her."
"I understand." He says as he looks past me like he was remembering something from his past. "But messing with time is very dangerous. You could accidentally do something that changes the future."
"I know," I say groaning. "God, why does everything have to be so difficult?"
"Because it's life, and life is difficult." He replies and I smirk at him.
"Thanks I've been working on it for a while now." He says making a smirk cross his lips. I lean my head against his chest and letting out another sigh say, "Tony and I will take it apart in the morning, and FRIDAY and I will destroy all the data."
"Thank you Jen," he says as he lays his chin on the top of my head pulling me into a hug. He always gave warm hugs that felt almost familiar. Then as soon as the hug started it stopped. He pulls away and giving me an flustered smile starts to walk back to the room to undoubtedly yell at Tony some more.
"Steve wait," I say making him stop and turn towards me with a eager look on his face.
"You wanna be my date for the party tonight?" I ask surprising myself.
"Sure," he says smiling softly at me.
"Really?" I ask as my eyes widen in disbelief.
"I'd like that." I say as I smile at him. He smiles back and gives me short wave before he walks back into the room. Biting my lip I slowly turn toward the elevator before I jump up and down in excitement.
Yay I got a date with Steve!
I smile brightly and right before I am able to reach the elevator I hear a loud and panicked beeping screech out and I glance down at my wrist to see the numbers flashing wildly.
"JEN!" I hear Tony cry out and I instantly turn back to him with confusion filling my emerald eyes. I see all of them running toward me with panic filling their eyes and I am suddenly filled with worry. I suddenly feel a shocking sensation and I glance down at me wrist to see that electricity was covering my arm and moving up until it covered my body.
"Tony! What's going on?" I cry out as I scratch at the numbers as they start to itch.
"I don't know! The controls are malfunctioning; we have to get it out of you now!"
"Tony make it stop!" I cry as I reach out for him but right as my fingers graze his everything disappears and I'm left with darkness. "Hello?" I call out but it's quiet. Too quiet. Suddenly a loud noise that sounds like artillery being fired from mortars fills my ears and I panic. "WHERE THE HELL AM I?"
