"Wait. Hold up. Is that what I was?" The smile slips from Henry's mouth completely. "Pardon?" "New Year's Eve. Six years ago," Alex clarifies. "Was I a battle you didn't choose?" He watches Henry's face fall as the laughter is sucked out of him in real time; Alex instantly misses it. He wants to take it back—to stay in the version of things where he and Henry could laugh as they splashed in the water under the bridge. They can't do that now that Alex shoved Henry's head beneath the surface.

OR: Henry found a way to avoid the correspondence dinner. Alex never kissed him the Red Room. They never fell in love. Six years later, they both find themselves in New York City, living wildly different lives, and have a chance to start again.

It reminds him of when he was a toddler, and June insisted on tucking him in at night.  “Why are you looking at me like that?”  Her fingers absently comb through his hair. “I need you to wake up, you little shit,” she says. Her voice is soft and fond and something else that Alex can’t put his finger on. It could pass as the answer to his question, but Alex isn't convinced June heard him at all.  “Yeah,” he drawls, prying her hands off his face and taking a very deliberate step backward. “You’re freaking me out here, Bug.” June's demeanor changes. Out of nowhere, her eyes go stern as stone—and there's none of that eerie softness in her voice when she speaks again. Instead, loud enough to make Alex's ears ring, she commands: “Wake up.”

OR: Alex never makes it to Kensington because fate has other plans. Nothing like a coma to put things in perspective, huh?

He’s been pacing the length of the house for the better part of an hour now, restless after 48 hours of involuntary confinement. The blizzard outside is unrelenting, to the point that city officials have recommended staying indoors until conditions clear. It’s actually a “suggestion” that Alex might’ve tested if a) Henry weren’t taking the ‘sTaTe oF eMeRgEnCy’ so seriously and b) if not for the fact that their door has literally been frozen shut. “Baby,” Alex says, deliberate and slow, because he knows it’ll earn him the long-suffering, utterly helpless expression it always does. “I’m crawling out of my skin here. Can you just… distract me?”

He had even less time to stop, turn to the asshole with the intention of saying something (hopefully) less cliche than, "Hey, I'm walkin' here!" and watch helplessly as a perfect stranger stepped backward, off the curb and directly into the path of a bike messenger. And that's the story of how Alex Claremont-Diaz went from doe-eyed future lawyer to an actual murderer. Cue the Cell Block Tango. No, that's a joke—but it is how he ended up here, anxiously drumming his fingers against his thigh in a hospital waiting room while someone he may or may not be responsible for maiming gets his wrist wrapped in a cast. …Actually, does this qualify as a maiming? Does the injury have to be permanent, or does even temporarily snapping someone's bone count? What is the legal definition of maiming, exactly? Alex is about to get his phone out to Google when a very tired-looking nurse pops out from the emergency room door and says, "Alex? Is there an Alex out here?"

OR: Alex didn't plan to push Henry Fox into oncoming traffic.

Fic Writing Review 2023!

So, as some of you know... 2023 was extremely difficult for me. I only have 7,147 words on AO3 for the year, and that includes the drabble collection I just started for the month of December. I didn't realize until I did this that I only published one full-length fic in 2023. Oof!

As a result, I'll be skipping most of this exercise and just focusing on my current projects and the future. Here is the full review completed by someone who wrote multiple fics lol.
