“So, why history?”

Billy glances up from the test he’s trying to grade. McVries is sitting at the other end of the table, eating some kind of raw meat. He always has the same thing for lunch and though it smells foul, Billy appreciates it. It drives Olson and his jabbering away from the teacher’s lounge.

“Stebbins?”

Question. Right. “I found it interesting.”

“Bullshit,” McVries says. “If that were true you woulda gone and gotten a good paying job. People don’t teach just because. C’mon Stebbins, say something real for once.”

“Fine. I got into it because of my father.”
