This issue kinda sets a precedent for future Archie Sonic issues before the Panic in the Sky arc. Expect to see the pattern of “Sonic and one or two-Freedom Fighters beating up Egg Soldiers and Badniks“ and “confronting the Egg Boss defeating them“. Is it formulaic? Kinda. Does it take away any good qualities? Honestly no! While its a familiar song and dance, I’m willing to bet it was to make it as close to the games as they could, with them treating each new zone and Egg Army confrontation as a different zone. Its rather game-like and while it doesn’t flow as well in comic form, I still appreciate that each time the good guys go out to beat up bad guys, they’re all new faces and all from different and varying locations.
And, of course, the new Egg Bosses! Clearly the highlight of most of these post-reboot issues.
Readers already assumed the larger walrus Egg Boss Tundra to be Rotor’s dad, going by his general shape and how he appeared in the Free Comic Book Day/Sonic Super Digest issue, But damn, what a reveal! I already love how Adam Bryce Thomas‘ art looks, but he draws Tundra here very menacingly with the gleam in his glasses and his icy-cybernetic tusks.
Even Gabriel Cassata‘s colouring isn’t that bad this issue, but that could be due to the cold and sterile setting being a perfect fit for this style of colours.
