But what did your mom think? ��

She didn’t make it in the end -- too busy tabling with her startup.  But I practiced my slides for her and my dad the night before. :)  They were mildly interested -- not nearly as much so as the actual audience, because they lacked context/personal investment.  They gave helpful feedback, though!

Not the point of the post, but it's always interesting to see the different meanings some words/phrases have in the same language. Someone describing me as "pretty good" would actually make me quite pleased. (And "quite" is another one of those words that's different for each person, I swear. Damned English.)

I love this whole post but had to add this: my spouse is from a different part of the US than I am, and early on, called something I had cooked "pretty good." I was very displeased. Turns out it's a dialect difference: for me it means "acceptable, could be worse, not bad, B- I guess" -- for them it means "darned good, really nice, enjoyable, would recommend." So who knows--sounds like you speak my dialect and maybe the reviewer doesn't!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers (◠‿◠✿)

Sister in Arms (Avengers) - Weaving fill-in stories for the entire MCU Avengers series from Laura Barton’s point of view, writing her as a sort of military/cop’s wife, building her trust and sense of family with Natasha... This was a massive amount of fun to write and I do want to do more with it.

Disfunction (Teen Titans) - This was such a psychological journey, trying to figure out Raven’s mindset, address her emotional conflicts in a realistic way, come to some kind of satisfying conclusion. I’m scared to go back and do an epilogue now because I’m not sure I can do a final note that lives up to what I’ve written thus far and is worth the wait.

Blaze of Glory (Adventure Time) - I wrote songs for this! I have no skill for music or poetry, but I’m pretty damn proud with what I came up with for Marceline. I think this is the closest I got to writing something that felt like it could be an actual episode of the show.

Home for the Holidays (Ghostbusters) - I know I used this in another favorites post lately, but I just really love how much this story took on a life of its own and now I love all of Patty’s family. This felt like writing Sister in Arms, fleshing out characters we barely met or never met in canon and developing sweet family moments for characters who have had a hard time of it in life.

Old Acquaintance (Doctor Who) - I love Donna Noble. I love her relationship with the Tenth Doctor. I need to finish transferring all my DW fics over from LiveJournal to AO3 and FF.net. This was one of my favorites, though, covering where Donna was during the year the Master ruled the world in the Season 3 finale, including an almost-encounter with Martha.

Okay, I have so many more I love for various reasons, but those are a few highlights from each major fandom I’ve written for.

(Except NCIS! I forgot to do one from NCIS! Oh well, next meme/ask.)

8: (if you have either or both) how do youmanage time with writing, work, school etc.? 

I actually do the majority of my fic writing (or at least the initial drafts and breakdowns) during lunch breaks at work. A ton of my fics have been written, at least in part, at the Subway next to the campus I teach at. When I really get on writing sprees, though, is on the laptop in bed either before going to sleep or in lazy hours when I wake up, but those can only happen on days I’m off work. Also, brainstorming plot lines tends to happen while driving to and from jobs.

18: any fanmixes you’ve made for this fic/verse? 

Fanmixes are playlists of songs you relate to the story/characters, right? I don’t tend to make those, but I inevitably connect songs I hear on the radio to whatever fandom I’m obsessed with at the moment, fitting them to scenarios or characters, etc. Sara Bareilles’ “She Used to be Mine” is so strongly connected to Abby and Erin for me now I did a lyric screencap set for it. (I’ve listened to a lot of her music while writing fic.) I do like listening to the Ghostbusters soundtrack when writing GB fic, but that isn’t always necessary.

Now I’m tempted to see what songs I connect with different fics and maybe do a post on that in case any readers are interested.

33: favorite one-shot you’ve written? 

Oh, that’s a hard choice. Talk about picking between your children. The vast majority of my fics are one-shots because I have an easier time getting out a quick vignette of a specific idea than plotting out an entire multi-chapter story arc. Hm.

I’m really proud of my Adventure Time fic “Enough”, which was a fun collaborative fic-verse expanding on two other creators’ ideas. My Wicked fic “History” took a lot of planning and I feel like it turned out a nice blend of the plot of the musical with some of the narrative feel of the novel. For Ghostbusters, I’m really torn. I love “Bonding Potential” and “Shield Efficiency” a lot, but I think I have to go with “Home for the Holidays” because that story just took on a life of its own and I swear all the characters of Patty’s family created themselves and just showed up fully-formed and surprised me with details throughout.

lol The middle two chapters are pretty much fluff with just a little relationshippy angst. It’s just the first and last two that are sadder (the last one probably the worst), but again I try to cut it with a bit of hope and healing throughout. I didn’t go as dark as the source material. :)
