DIY Puppets For Your Children
Puppets are a great medium to help children maintain attention towards learning new things. Puppets can be used to bring a story to life visually and help a parent or teacher gain the attention of their children when teaching or reading to them. Puppets are also a great way to help children communicate their minds and feelings. They often feel intimidated by adults, so communicating through a puppet can be much more inviting and enticing for children, allowing them to freely express their selves. No matter how one looks at it, puppets are a great tool parents and teachers can use to help children in their learning experiences. Here are a couple of ways you can make puppets for you and your children at home with common everyday household items.
Sock Puppets
Have you ever done your laundry and always end up missing one sock?! Instead of throwing that other sock away, save that sock and use it to make a sock puppet! Sock puppets are easy to make and children can have a lot of fun making them as well. They can use their imagination to create whatever their heart and mind desires. Children can color the socks and glue on additional parts to add features to their puppet. The great part about this is that it is very cheap to make and requires very little investment.
Finger Puppets
Another great type of puppet one can make at home is a finger puppet. These can be made with felt or paper mache, however one can use another item that most people would just throw away. To make a very cheap and effective finger puppet, you can just use a used up toilet paper roll. The brown cardboard remainder has almost no other use, and can easily be obtained. You can work with your children to paint and design these rolls in many different ways. You can also just print out a picture and attach it to the roll to make it even easier to make.
Stick Puppets
Stick puppets are another great form of puppetry that you can make at home. If you have some skewers lying around, you can save a couple of them and have children create stick puppets out of these. They can grab either sheets of felt, or regular paper, and draw out whatever they desire. They can then use that to attach to the skewer sticks. The children can then be free to play with them on their own, or you can use them as accessories while reading or teaching them!
Shadow Puppets
Shadow puppets are the easiest to make and they are a great way for parents to bond with their children. Shadow puppets only require some sort of light, like a flashlight or lamp, and a bed sheet. Parents can then use their hands to create different kinds of animals and creatures and use those shadows to tell stories as well. They are a great for interacting and require almost no work or preparation at all!
Conclusion
Puppets can be created in many different forms such as sock puppets, finger puppets, stick puppets, or shadow puppets. Though they may seem different, they can all be used towards the same goal, which is helping children learn. Puppets can be used as an accessory to help maintain their attention or directly to interact with the children. Puppets can also be used as a medium for communication between an adult and a child. Puppetry is a very important tool that can be created using everyday household items we would normally throw away. Save the items listed above and designate a day for arts and crafts and use these items to help children explore the depths of their imagination through the use of puppetry!
