What was the point of teasing and hinting at Stiles bisexuality? Stiles is arguably the most beloved character on the show. He’s smart, funny, and attractive. Surrounded by alphas (both literal and figurative) he offers up a softer, though no less effective version of strength and masculinity. He’s desirable to woman, even the most popular girl in school, despite, or rather BECAUSE OF his goofiness, compassion, and intelligence. Acknowledging his bisexuality would have been truly meaningful representation. Bisexual men face so much discrimination, disbelief, and ridicule. Stiles would have been an aspirational icon for so many bi teens and adults. Instead the show makes jokes, and little winks, as though that’s enough. It’s disappointing on a show that has no problem subverting the usual homophobia of the popular jocks and tough guys. I realize Dylan O’Brien isn’t returning for the Teen Wolf movie, and I get it. But part of me wishes he would just so we could get a genuine acknowledgement of Stiles bisexuality. It would re-write so many moments and jokes, taking them from “let’s laugh because the soft boy must be gay” to “that’s just Stiles being Stiles, and being bi af” which would make the show that much better.
