Silent Hill 2 (2024) FULL SPOILER/MUSIC COMMENTARY | Part 14 - FINALE
We did it. We made it to the Stillness ending. And we turned an hour of gameplay into 4 hours of music analysis and story discussion.
If you want to start from the beginning and see the whole 17-video playthrough (including discussions with Andy Sudol, a professional sound engineer, and Vic Frederick, an MFA in English), the playlist can be found HERE.
Thank you to everyone who came along for the journey, particularly @cleolinda ( @beneath-the-null-moon ) for all the discussion, theorizing, and support. She and I plan on recording a podcast-esque discussion reflecting on the game--keep an eye on our blogs for more on that.
Also, I'll continue to post Staying on Theme videos every Monday for the foreseeable future, so keep an eye out for those! Even if you saw the music segments on stream, the edited videos include supplemental material like on-screen chord names, definitions/references for music terminology, and some dorky audio/visual gags. Check them out!
Still figuring out what I might stream next; in the meantime, I'll be taking a break, playing my first playthrough of Silent Hill f off-stream when it comes out next week, and working on other projects that you'll hopefully hear about soon.
Thanks again!
Silent Hill 2 Remake Guide
How to get All New Game+ Endings in One Playthrough
Note that the Endings themselves aren't spoiled save for the titles, but the locations of items, names, etc, are spoiled as this is a comprehensive guide. I tried this recently, and it worked, and it took me forever to make this list so i decided to post it lol– I hope it helps. <3
Silent Hill 2 (2024) FULL SPOILER/MUSIC COMMENTARY | Part 7
Last night, we met back up with Laura, fought the Flesh Lips boss, and slipped out of reality(?) and into the Otherworld side of Brookhaven Hospital. Exploring the patients' story from this side of the veil, we saw their ultimate "treatments" at the hands of the director and his obsession. We also discussed the harmonic implications of a new piece for the remake, "Echoes of Silence," compared and contrasted the OG and remake versions of the "ANYWAY?!" scene, and the musical choices they made with the "Magdalene" theme that left me a little at a loss for words. See all this and more in the video above!
If you missed the previous streams and want to catch up, check out the YouTube Playlist for the entire playthrough thus far.
Next stream will be Wednesday, May 28 at 7PM EDT. Join us at twitch.tv/idoherty451 as we leave Brookhaven behind (but not the Otherworld) and discuss:
The final word from Brookhaven and which ending(s?) it foreshadows
What the rain might reflect RE: James' mental state
The liminal beauty amidst the harrowing journey through Otherworld South Vale
The strange notes James finds as he trails Laura through town
The new Angela scene at Rosewater Park
Tune in to see all this and more!
Umbra Veil (Stillness Ending) | Staying on Theme
Episode 20 of my deep dive into the Silent Hill 2 remake’s soundtrack on Staying on Theme is up! MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE GAME.
Breaking down the construction of "Umbra Veil," the piano piece that underscores the Stillness Ending. I actually recorded the bulk of this video this past Saturday, since I didn’t have any notes to draw from when I originally streamed this moment on the playthrough. I also recorded 45 minutes of video on Saturday, so you may end up seeing an extended version of this video at some point.
This is one of the most beautiful pieces in the game. I figured it out by ear on Saturday, and once I did, I couldn’t stop playing it. I will be playing this piece of music into oblivion.
These videos are clipped from my full spoiler/music commentary playthrough of the Silent Hill 2 remake, which you can watch on YouTube HERE. Expect a new episode of Staying on Theme every Monday at 9AM EST!
This is actually the last video of the main game. I’ve still got videos to edit for the rock songs, but I’m taking a break next week for the holidays.
Also, in January 2026, I’ll be starting something new: a streamed playthrough of Silent Hill 4, the game with the most music and story connections to Silent Hill 2, complete with music analysis for another season of Staying on Theme. Want to jump into the discussion in realtime? Then join me at twitch.tv/idoherty451 at 7PM EST on Wednesday, January 7, as we dive into Silent Hill 4: The Room.
And for anyone who’s been watching, reblogging, sharing, enjoying: Thank you so much. I’ve wanted to do this specific thing--a video series analyzing the music of Silent Hill 2--for years, and to finally have done it is like fulfilling a promise I made to my younger self. To know that other people have found enjoyment in it is incredibly gratifying. And if it in any way has deepened your understanding and appreciation of music, I can’t think of a better result.
See you in January. I’ll be waiting for you.
