Fight for Survival - April 2023 Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron strigosus) is a wildflower that is– or has been– very common in the Casa Grande area. But in the last couple years, Stinknet is taking over the area formerly populated by Daisy Fleabane. The first image is Daisy Fleabane surrounded by Stinknet. The second image is a patch of Daisy Fleabane which has not yet been overrun. The third image is one of the bicycle paths on which I ride regularly. Last year it was bordered with large patches of Daisy Fleabane. Now the wildflowers which border the bike path are almost exclusively Stinknet. MWM

Phlox and Stinknet - March 2023 The trail which I took to get down to the Gila River normally allowed Jeeps, etc to get onto the dry riverbed. Alongside that wide trail was a huge patch of Stinknet. And within that patch of Stinknet was a single purple phlox. The contrast of the purple and the yellow made for a good image. The fact that Stinknet was growing along the banks of the Gila River and was in bloom while the river flooded means that the seeds of the Stinknet have been swept downstream. Eradication… or even control… of this invasive stinking weed is but a dream for Arizona. MWM

Stinknet - March 2023 Stinknet (Oncosiphon Piluliferum) is a ground cover found primarily in the extreme southern California / northern Mexico area. It is an “aggressive invasive” plant and was kept out of Arizona for many years until 2018. In 2018 an idiot landscaper in northeastern Phoenix began planting it as a border/ground cover because it was so hardy and had such pretty flowers. I don’t know if he lost his license (if he ever had one) but I am sure he lost most of his customers because this stuff STINKS! The odor of stinknet in bloom has been described as everything from turpentine to rotting meat. Personally, I think it smells like rancid sage, or perhaps rancid meat marinating in sage. I think it is almost overpowering; Kathy can barely smell it. The flowers are pretty. I had never seen it before, but the rangers at Estrella Regional Park told us what it was and how it got there. They are hoping to eradicate it, but as much of it as we saw everywhere in the area, I don’t think they have a chance. In a few years, Phoenix and the surrounding area will stink to high heaven whenever the wildflowers bloom. MWM

Stinknet Has Reached Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona

Yesterday (June 14, 2019), I discovered a new invasive weed growing in Humboldt. The plant’s small yellow flowers caught my attention as I walked along Old Black Canyon Highway. Roads are common dispersal routes for invading weeds. First the roadsides, next the yards and hillsides.
