The message from Maria had been a little out of the blue -- only because Kezia couldn’t call the two of them close. Had Kezia spent more thought on it would have made sense. After that night she and Zoe had spent huddled together, eating popcorn and brownies, playing a drinking game to Friends that quickly dissolved to nonsense, she should have figured Maria would know something was up. Because Maria and Zoe were together and that’s what happened when you were with someone. Kezia still wore the condensed sadness of that night, tight and balled up, like a piece of beach glass wadded up just behind her breastbone.
The message did caught her a little off guard, but not unpleasantly so. Kezia liked Maria, for all she knew of the girl. Which wasn’t much. But Zoe was happy, which Kezia liked very, very much. And even without Zoe, there was Joshua. He and Maria were thicker than thieves and anyone that Josh was all right with was all right with Kezia.
Popping her board up from the ground, Kezia slipped into the chosen coffee shop with a jangle of the bell above the door. Smooth Moves was posed at an option but sometimes Kezia just wanted to be away from work when she wasn’t on shift. Spotting Maria quickly, Kezia fell gracelessly into the seat across from her. “Hey,” she greeted, voice muted but openly friendly. “What’s up?” Board stashed safely under the table, she allowed herself to meet the other woman’s eyes. There was something else in those dark eyes, but just what, Kezia couldn’t say.
