ok but these new ravelry yarnball emojis
The team from The Woolery (who are after my heart apparently) went ahead and performed an experiment on what would happen to these gorgeous-looking roving-as-yarn blankets.
Responses from people who have made these, off of r/knitting:
“It was a mess after about a month. Then she tried to wash it and it fell apart.”
“I have to agree with this video 100%! I bought over $500 worth of yarn off Etsy, but when I got it, it looked like a long string of the roving in your video. I hand knit a beautiful queen size blanket. And now it lives in my craft room, behind closed doors. So it doesn’t get destroyed. And because when I use it, the merino fibers tickle my nose. I guess I did something on my bucket list though.”
“Ooof. Wish I'd had this last summer. My aunt begged me knit her one of these and I obliged. $125 price tag even with coupon use and it just pulls right apart. I assumed it was something I could fix and went on and made one for myself. It's super cozy but boy does it just look awful. Luckily I don't have any pets to exacerbate this. But thank you for the explanation! I'm going to use this to talk my sister down from asking me for one. ;)”
“Yes! I had a rug made out of this stuff! It was cut like carpet, and looked so cute and cozy/chunky, but it shed like a large dog, and got filthy immediately.”
“I had hundreds of requests to make these. Every single time I said no and my explaination was "They are a prop, at most. They shed, you can't wash them and it's like trying to knit a blanket out of cotton candy. It would be a few hundred in just roving." Most people were happy that I didn't take their money.....My "competitor" immediately posted that she could make them. She made probably 250+ and sold them at craft shows and made to order for Christmas. $75-$450 each, based on size. By mid January, she was swamped with refund requests.... she didn't tell anyone that the blankets would fall apart if you look at them. She ended up closing her Etsy/FB shops and noone can find her.”

2/3 of the way done on my ombré knit quilt blanket by Melina Martin Gingras. Cat for scale.
It of course got delayed cause I ran out of yarn and had to wait for another skein just to knit 10 rows 😤 They dye lot is off too, so it somewhat stands out. Let me know if you can spot it!
I bought the yarn as listed from the pattern and the odd thing is, I have an extra unused skein in a different color. The authors gauge must have been drastically different from mine smh

She is legally required to sit there every time I warp the loom. Was in her adoption paperwork.
