A project on the go, this time with the photographer Selim Korycki who took a series of portraits of London bicycle couriers. The aim is to produce an original binding that reflects the spirit of the subject. This time the bicycle: the bread earning tool of the courier. For this book I will be using the spokes of a wheel as a way to keep the pages together. Having the idea in mind is one thing, making it concrete another. I have made a rough dummy which proves me that this idea can be made real, but not without challenges.

PREFABS: PALACE FOR THE PEOPLE I have been working with the photographer Elisabeth Blanchet who has been photographing for the last 11 years people living in prefabs, in the uk. Her work will be exhibited at the photofusion gallery in Brixton, London and will be opening on the 27 June 2013. For the exhibition I have made four interactive cubes depicting the prefabs (from the outside and the inside) and their inhabitants. Each cube measures 300 x 300mm and is composed of eight 75 x 75mm cubes each. That is a total of 192 squares of 2mm thick grey card, cut to three different measurements. Here for the maths! These cubes, each focusing on one prefab inhabitant, can be opened four times and reveal new photographs. The book 'The prefab diaries' by Elisabeth Blanchet will also be launched at the exhibition's opening. I have designed it with Selim Koricky.

This book, my first commission, was especially made as a present to Ishido Shizufumi sensei to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his visits to Europe. For the last 30 years, twice a year Ishido sensei has been coming to teach iaido and Jodo in the UK and other European countries. I used the Japanese kikkō toji (tortoise shell) book biding technique. The soft cover is made of chiyogami paper, the end paper is a pearlised double fan ivory 90gsm paper. The pages were digitally printed on silk paper 210 x 297 mmm. The book lives in a wraparound case, covered with purple plum silk and ebony black 135gsm paper inside. It stays closed with two wood sanz clasps.
