↪  ZACH IS NOT A BAD PERSON.  jeff is a strong believer of this statement.  he did, however,  surround himself with QUESTIONABLE company.  jeff doesn’t hold it against him.  in fact,  jeff atkins offered zach a SAFE SPACE away from that group.  no questions asked.↪  ZACH IS HIS BEST FRIEND.  jeff atkins was friendly toward everyone,   but zach dempsey was the only person to know the deeper,  inner workings of the baseball player.  their friendship,  however,  is not PUBLIC knowledge.  it is casual  and  quiet  -  both satisfied with this fact.  ↪  JEFF’S PARENTS LOVE ZACH.  they welcome him with open arms,   grateful for the friendship he has with their son.   before zach officially met the atkins parents,  jeff talked him up.  he had NOTHING but good things to say.  zach dempsey has become a sort of second son to jeff’s parents.↪   THEY DON’T DO MUCH WHEN THEY’RE TOGETHER.  they don’t need to.  most of the time,   they’re eating food  &  listening to music or playing video games.   when they talk,  it is never anything BAD.  sure,   they discuss people -  but it isn’t a process of slandering their names.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

there is a brief pause no longer than a single second before her lips curl in a bittersweet smile.  ( it’s unusual for her, who only ever forced a grin onto her face. )  “no,” she speaks evenly,  no hint of hesitation.  if it was up to her,  may wouldn’t have ever given away the secret she had fought tooth and nail to hide.  zach had more important things to worry about than her - like his biology test!  he had to be focused so he could reach his dreams.

there is a fatigue that wiggles its way into her mind,  but it isn’t the kind that would be cured by a nap.  it was worn emotions,  weathered mental effort  -- things that had grown frayed as she held them under lock and key.  without warning, her head falls against his shoulder,  arms moving to wrap around his.

“there is a lot going on, zee,” she mutters quietly, cheek pressed against his arm.  she’s silent for a moment before a sigh escapes her lips and she forces her gaze to look at his face ( something she has avoided since the question was asked. )  “it wasn’t important,  okay?  there’s better things to worry about.”

   “i’m not going to a party,”  luella speaks with finality,  gaze focused on the canvas in front of her.   there is a mess of swirls - dark blue and black - that makes her lost,   hand hovering over the image as she contemplates just what she’s going to do.  she’s oblivious to the strong scent of the paint that coats the walls of the room - that coats her - and equally as clueless to the smears that have been wiped on her clothes.  “when have you ever known me to go to one of those?”

being back at school was about as strange as the silence his entrance commanded and the stares that followed his every move.  it made his skin crawl and heart thud wildly in his chest.  he wanted it to stop,  but he knew it wouldn’t. he wanted to shout at them,  but his mouth wouldn’t move.  instead, he keeps the wide grin across his lips -- the whole agonizing day.

so when he can finally get away from all of it,  he wastes NO time.  he practically bolts from his last class, ignoring the brief dizziness that causes him to stumble.  his pace stays the same until he spots his friend.  “yo,  zachy!” he calls to get his attention,  stopping beside him.  “let’s go get some ice cream.”   he isn’t the biggest fan of the sweet treat,  but he could definitely use some comfort food.

“Well, if it isn’t the green giant-- I mean Zach Dempsey.” Sheri chirped as she ventured into their shared biology class. Placing her books down on the desk beside his, she flashed him her usual award winning smile before taking a seat. “What do you think the chances are teach forgot about last night’s homework?”

     tacos  were  one of the BEST things about the week  even  if it was only a couple days in.   for jeff - who took too many diet restrictions into account - it was a CHEAT DAY.  “ hunger has nothing to do with the tacos,  man. ”  he stuffs part of a taco into his mouth,  chewing before pushing it to the side like a squirrel.   “ i hear some girls eat tacos as their comfort food instead of ice cream,  can you believe that? ”
