right now? they’re going pretty alright, im doing decent in school, my friends are amazing, and i have a faint idea of what i want to do when i graduate, but that’s a future problem so im going to focus on the now and make sure im doing as best as i can

I'm writing about a society w/ a totalitarian government & the main & her best friend searched s/t they're not supposed to & instead of exile like the normal punishment they're taken in as maids for the King since the mains father is an asset in the government & would leave if his daughter was exiled. The main is black & I was wondering if that is a no-no. The slavery she is forced into has nothing to do with her race but still, is that wrong even tho she does get out of it?

Black Characters & Servitude as Punishment

Everyone should know by now how I feel about Black people happening to be enslaved no matter the setting. This isn’t a clear cut case that prompts by usual phrase: why we always gotta be slaves? Still, tread carefully as it easily leans towards offensive.

Some considerations for you with this situation:

Why Maids? Why were they forced to be maids of all things? Is that really the only possibility? For example, sending them on a near impossible quest. What other ways or work could make up their debt, like using their skills in x to do x for the king? There are other things that could be done besides the same ole Black person in slavery situation.

Race Variety: What race is the best friend? It’s less problematic if the friend happens to be white, loosening the connection that the MC was enslaved due to race, though I would not encourage changing their race even if they’re not currently white. Instead, you could make current servants be white or a variety of races.

The Father: What makes the father agree that he wants to work for the government that is putting his daughter in servitude? Any efforts on his part to get his daughter out of this situation? It would be nice to see that.

Avoid brutalized Black bodies and shock value torture stories:Be careful with any excessive bad treatment. Is this servitude permanent or are they freed at some point? How brutal is the work they are doing and what if any abuses do they suffer? Are they worked to the bone, insulted at every turn? 

Unfair Treatment: Any discrepancy between how the friends are treated? You can imply many things by the treatment of the two characters (Treating the lighter, straight and/or non-black person better than a darker, not straight and/or Black person) and if that behavior is not confronted as unfair in the narrative, the narrative condones it with its silence.

On Handling Trauma: Please appropriately handle any trauma, mental or physical damage they may have suffered from their servitude. This shouldn’t be a problem if their servitude is more inconvenience than traumatizing. Regardless, do your research on how these situations affect people.

My favourite dog breed used to be huskies and I do still adore them but pitbulls are so hated against and just absolutely adorable and friendly that they're now my favourite breed I hope to have a few when I'm older!!!
