Grandma and Grandpa visit San Francisco in 1951
In 1951 my father took his dad and mom to visit San Francisco. It was their first time out of Utah and just before he moved to Europe. The car is my father's new '51 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop and he decided that it needed a road trip. I was wondering where they were exactly. I can see Alcatraz in the background and from the angle and since the water tower is on the left, I'd place them at the Marina Green area, but I wasn't sure exactly where.
In the Google aerial view pictures I didn't see the lion statue or the stone wall or the posts along that area, but there was a stone lighthouse that looked like it matched the wall by the lion at the end of the Marina Jetty and that was my best clue as to where they were but it wasn't enough.
Then I went to Google street view to look more closely at the miniature stone light house and in this view you can see what appear to be the remnants of the farther wall with the pillars behind the lighthouse but I still wasn't sure.
After searching and searching eventually I found this an archive with this picture of the stone lighthouse with the wall around it and the lion on the wall. We can see that the wall and the lion were removed to make access for an extension to the jetty that we see in the street view.
So the mystery is solved. Now I know that the picture was taken from the end of the Marina Jetty to the left of the stone light house, but I still haven't found out what happened to the lion.
