One of Wyoming's Iconic Checkerboard Curly Families Carol Walker; 2025

The Wyoming Checkerboard herd is unlike any other. Not only are they especially striking---many with a rare gene that results in curls from their long eyelashes to their curly tails---but they roam some of the most expansive and rugged high-desert landscapes in the West.

Unbeknownst to the Wyoming Checkerboard horses, the land they call home is divided by invisible, yet heavily contested boundaries. The Checkerboard is made up of alternating private and public land---and of course, no one bothered to tell the local wildlife.

With the private land owned by livestock and energy interests who have strong ties to the government, these entities---such as Rock Springs Grazing Association---have been pushing to eliminate these herds for YEARS.

After over 14 years of legal battles, recent months have yielded some major victories! This summer, we won a major court ruling at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals halting the BLM's plan to remove THREE THOUSAND of these iconic animals. Then just this month, we were forced to file another roundup plan despite the court ruling. But just hours after we had filed a new lawsuit this month, the October roundup was called off. These roundups would have truly devastated the Wyoming herds.
