❝ i am also feeling these emotions! ❞
“But what does it mean?” Riley asked, wishing Maya were there to tell her how she felt. But she wasn’t; it was just her, her and Zay, sitting in the bay window, where every important conversation ever seemed to happen. Her dad let Zay in with no problem, the same way he let Farkle in -- there was no chasing, no yelling, no shoe stealing. Not the way there was with Lucas.
Because Lucas was different... wasn’t he? Riley liked Lucas, and only Lucas.
But Jexica? She was a whole nother story. For a whole month now, Riley came home everyday, signed onto her fake profile, and talked to Zay until it was time for bed, smiling wider than she remembered smiling since they’d all visited Texas last year and everything had started to go wrong. She’d thought it was nothing, but sitting here, confessing to Zay that she was the Jexica he had liked so much all this time, it was... weird. The sense of missing something that wasn’t even totally gone yet, and Riley had kept rambling about how she liked talking to him more than anybody else, and she didn’t want it to stop.
She turned to Zay, her eyes wide with panic as the truth she’d known for the past two and a half years started to seep away, and Riley started to realize that just like she’d grown and changed, her feelings had too. Fear crept into her voice as she asked Zay, one more time, “Zay, what does it mean that being Jexica and talking all night to you is one of my favorite things in the whole world now?”
