Wellema Hat Shop in Altadena, California

I met Cody Wellema for the first time a few months ago, as he stood in his particularly well-groomed space at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Flea market hats - even in well-groomed spaces - tend to be the worst, so I regarded him suspiciously. As I got closer, though, I could see his hats were the real deal. I wondered if he might be, too.

“Where are you based?” I asked him. Folks come to the Rose Bowl from all over. I expected he’d say San Francisco or Texas or New York.

“Altadena.” He said. Not only was he a few miles down the road, in other words, but he was in one of the quietest and most unassuming of Los Angeles suburbs. 

I took a card, asked him if he did repairs, and made a mental note to stop by sometime. The last time I got a hat fixed up in LA, the shop had done a pretty lousy job, and my favorite hat needed a new band. 

When I finally made it out to Altadena, I was impressed by what I found. Indeed, when I walked in the second time, Cody was hard at work in the back. The noise was tremendous - I thought it sounded like a power sander. Turns out that was because it was a power sander.

Cody moved to Altadena from Santa Barbara, where he’d been making hats for a few years, initially in his garage and later in an off-the-beaten track retail space. He moved to Altadena at a friend’s suggestion (the friend in question owns a great vintage and antique shop on the same block), and Cody setup up a lovely store, Wellema Hat Shop.

Cody replaced my hat band - you can see the desiccated old one next to my hat in one of the shots above - and told me a bit about his business. While he sells some vintage hats and does cleaning, blocking and repairs, his main business is new custom hats. Prices aren’t insignificant, but they are reasonable for the quality - about $400-600. My new band cost me $40, with no charge for the pleasant conversation.

THEY HAVE CHARACTER PLATES NOW?? Also I caved and got the Jasper gumball plush. He has cute floppy ears OKAY.

I pointed excitedly to the portrait bot picture in the entrance and one of my friends (who doesn’t usually come to cec with us) was like “I don’t like that. We have to go NOW.” Which. Okay. Fair response to Ptt Chuck.

We were there for a party and the walkaround gave the birthday star a fist bump :o] also had another conversation with the manager about our cec stuffed animals

This is from a new token plinko game at my local. Most of the tokens were Rockstar and very shiny, with only ~4 Avenger tokens visible in the pile. My hypothesis is that these were produced specifically for the machine.

had a nice night on Friday :o) we finally opened The Chegg and I got a sick ass Helen tech deck. We also took several goofy photos in the photo booth and they tried to charge us 60 dollars at the prize counter for one 9 inch Hello Kitty stuffed animal. ALSO I wore my really cool Avenger shirt for the first time. I was saving it:

Cec seems to be running this new ad campaign revolving around all the “new stuff” they’ve got, with the remodels and the gumball plushies and expanded menu all that junk. Listen I know we all love the animatronics but I’ve genuinely been having so so so much fun going to 2.0s I’ve never been to before, I went to my recently gutted childhood 2 stage and genuinely had a really nice time, when I expected the experience to be way more bittersweet and saddening. I dunno! It felt super natural! And, like, I don’t think cec would be pushing the remodel THIS HARD if it wasn’t successful with the general public. I was on here in 2018 crying over having just learned about 2.0s and reblogging saveourshows stuff all the time but. I’ve given it some thought, and I’m not that torn up about it anymore. Not like the old showtapes or huge catalogue of animatronic content on YouTube is going anywhere. I wasn’t exactly visiting a three stage every day to begin with, so my means of experiencing that sort of thing (online) isn’t going anywhere. Plus I really like the current show content :o)

My blog is themed around, like, 2009 cec. It started off being ptt themed. Im really autistic about rockstar content. We can coexist!
