They almost burst with laughter right then and there as they get the call. However, they were not stupid. On the contrary, they were quite smart, really. And thus, they answer only with words.

“Not a chance, brother. Not a fucking chance. Why don’t you call me back when you’ve eaten your helmet out of its current casing?” And now they burst, high peeling and cackling laughter echoing in the main chamber of their realm.

Headcanon  ||  The Wake

Death’s not one to wear black to a funeral or wake of someone dear to her. For her, black is the color of her every day wardrobe, and paying her respect to one she cared for warrants her breaking from her norm. So when it came to Dream’s wake, she knew that she would not be wearing her signature color. 

And thus, she chose to wear red. Ruby red, in fact. The exact shade of her dear brother’s dreamstone. It was as much a way for her to honor his existence and all that he’d done---ill or good---as it was her gentle way of reminding all those present that, while this version of Dream no longer physically existed, he was still very much there with them. In their hearts, their memories, and---most importantly---in their dreams. 

He is, was, and always will be dear to her. Of course she would find a way to honor him even then.

He’d chosen freedom over the wishes of  his father. He’d chosen self satisfaction over trillions of souls. 

What happened once he left wasn’t his fault. He was still Lucifer, he was still the rightful ruler of  the place called hell, and yet… he was not any longer.  Not in the ways that counted; wings were gone, his power was diminished, and yet he still had droves that went to his council. billions that blamed him for their crimes. 

Such a  waste of his father’s creations. such a waste of everything - maybe he should have done more while he was down there. Maybe, he should have done much more, but that wasn’t  who he was. Nor was it who he’d ever be.

“You don’t wish more could have been done?” A simple  question as Lucifer filled his own class. “Or perhaps,” he said, taking a step forward,“you really don’t hope for something more than what you are.”

I first met Kadian in the Spooks fandom, where she plays an amazing OC that is easily better-written than some of the canon characters.  (That’s actually not the compliment I wish it were, given s9.)  She was the other person to help reignite my love for The Sandman, and the other person to enable me into making a blog for Morpheus’ youngest sister.  I’ve lost track of how much time we’ve spent discussing the results of merging some of our verses, with both heartbreaking angst and pure unadulterated crack resulting in equal amounts.  I’m pretty sure we’ve now made official a verse for the kids of our muses and the bullshit they get up to?  Kadian is a beautiful writer who suits her tone to her muse, with poetic prose filled to the brim with haunting imagery for Hel, cryptic melancholy for Dream, and straightfoward prose that highlights her thoughts for Julia.  At this point I’m probably going to have to buy and play the DA games just so I can play with her stupid DA muse because she is on the list of ‘follow anywhere and everywhere’.

If Loki didn’t know his host better, it might seem strange to hear something so absolutely mundane from his lips. But he has been a guest here for long enough to see another side of the Dream Lord -- desperately human in ways that gods could only pretend to be. And Loki, who has always nurtured a soft spot for those things that make humanity what they are -- that Morpheus has in spades -- has long since found himself hopelessly endeared.
