Storm Pets Development! (Well, a selection of it)
So we started off earlier this year talking about plans for the rest of the year. We got talking about future pet colours, and I mentioned the users having wanted 'storm' as a colour for almost as long as Subeta has been around. Seeing as we're almost done with glade (I believe there are under 10 pets still missing in glade?) and April being a time for showers and spring thunderstorms, I thought Vesnali would be a great time to release a storm colour.
(I won't talk much about the plot here, the writing for it was done largely alongside the colour development, but the art for the plot and specifically Tempest was based on the finished storm pets!)
Initially we had all looked through the user suggestion thread and used that as a starting point, but we also had to consider the colours we currently had - galactic was already blue and gold with a dark aura, darkmatter was black and purple, nightmare was dark greens. We wanted something a little different, and took to looking at photos of storms and found ourselves particularly attracted to those that had hints of pinks and reddish and warm purples in. We liked the warmth and after some discussion I posted a little tester with the jollin up there. We debated playing with gradients but ended up deciding it was too time consuming to pull off well, and the base colours shifted to a very slatey warm grey, using warm colours to shade.
We initially decided on grounding the pets - the lightning would be looking to travel to the ground and so it felt befitting that the pets would be, too. (Our water pets can still look floaty as they'll be surrounded by a conductor!)
As to the expressions - we ended up choosing a broader theme of 'how would THIS pet weather the storm?' - I enjoy having different species interact with/react to their potion colour differently as it just adds more variety to the pets for me, and gets us artists thinking more about the attitude of our pet species which can end up bringing out a lot more character.
Anyway - this is pretty much how this pet colour ended up getting made. A lot of user persistence, a bit of timing luck, and a few months of testing out palettes and poses and working together as a team to create something we could be proud of for such a long awaited user suggestion!
I've probably forgotten something, so feel free to ask me any questions you might have! (I'll answer them if I can ;) )
Full working size of the storm fester.
Man, I had a really great time with this one. (I really love this color, hot damn.) Birds of prey have really weird 3/4 view profiles though -- the smaller version of this makes it really hard to tell you're seeing the beak from the front and not the side :c OH WELL. SUCH IS LIFE.
Full working size of the storm wyllop!
LIGHTNING EVERYWHERE. JUST. SO MUCH LIGHTNING <3
NOW THAT STORM PETS ARE OUT, I CAN POST THESE :D
First off is the full working size for the storm escalade. I had so much fun with the fur on this dude ahhh.
I also discovered that I freaking love drawing lightning, SO much more than I like drawing the fire on reborn pets (Spoiler alert: That amount is none. At all.) So happy to have a pet with an aura that doesn't make me want to stab myself when I draw it! (The clouds are another story but OH WELL.)
