I awoke with a start, gasping for breath as I awoke from a nightmare for the life of me I could only remember vividly. The only thing I could recall was the feelings of confusion, fear, and the sound of lighting. As I calmed my breathing I finally took notice of my surroundings. My first coherent thought was ‘this is not my bed.
I was laying on a four poster bed with the curtains drawn. When I opened them the room was just as unfamiliar. The room was rather sparse for any decoration, with no other furniture besides the bed. The only thing of note was a fireplace with the last embers dying.
When I first tried to stand up I nearly collapsed onto the ground before I grabbed the bed frame for support. Made me realize how sore my entire body was, the kind of soreness you get from not moving for a long time. There was something else that felt strange about my body, but at the time I was more concerned about waking up in a strange place and brushed it aside.
Practically hugging the wall I made my way to the door and opened it, leading to a hallway. Like the room I found myself in it was scarcely furnished, with the addiction of it looking abandoned. There were cobwebs in every corner and I could feel the layers upon layers of dust as I used the wall for support.
Every room I checked was much the same as the hallway, looking like it hasn’t been touched in years, except the last one. Unlike the previous rooms there wasn’t a layer of dust coating everything and was filled with all sorts of furniture and scientific instruments. The object that caught my eye first was an operating table in the middle of a room. My hand ghosted across it, wondering what this was used for. Aside from that there was a long table completely covered in beakers, test tubes, a microscope, scalpels, pliers, surgical scissors, needle holders, drills, clamps, forceps, retractors, and an open journal.
As I went to read the writing on the page a hand gripped my shoulder. Startled, I yelped and tried to spin around but instead tripped and fell, knocking into the table on the way and causing some of the beakers to fall and crash onto the ground.
“Oh I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to frighten you.” The voice, now identified as a tall man with broad shoulders and long black hair tied back, said.
“It’s just when you weren’t in your room I became worried you might have hurt yourself, I’m glad.”
He bent down and lent a hand, I used the table to pull myself up instead. Moving away from the table and careful not to step on the glass I tried to glare at him.
”Who are you, and why am I here?” I said. Something about my voice sounded strange but I ignored it, too caught up in confusion and alarm to think about it.
“Do you have any memories from before? Do you know your name?”
I looked at him strangely “Of course I do, my name is-” And then I stopped, I couldn’t remember my name.
“So you don’t remember, but you seem to still possess cognitive functions of at least a teenager, but we will need further testing to make sure.” he said mostly to himself, the last half of the sentence becoming a mutter as put his hand on his chin.
My eyes wander towards the room's window, the face looking back at me is not mine.
The pitiable thing staring back was a mockery of life. His skin was sickeningly pale, with too long ebony hair with white streaks. The sclera was black as coal and his irises were a bright, horrid yellow that almost glowed in the dark like an animal’s. I pulled up my sleeve, mismatched skin held together by stitches is what greeted me.
