She was tucked into him. Both of them comfortable. His arm pulled her closer as his hand drew lazy, nonsense patterns. He took a deep breath, her presence calming the constant storm of his mind.
Her voice ebbed and flowed against the shores of his mind. The comforting words eroding the cliffs that plunged deep into the darkness that called his soul.
You can’t save her.
The whispers, the shadows…
You can’t save them all.
“Did you hear a word I said?”
Ben blinked.
“I’m sorry.”
You chuckled, burying your nose into his shoulder. “You’re always a galaxy away.”
Ben kissed the top of your head, eyes drifting closed.
That was the last day you’d seen him.
Ben Solo.
Still a padawan wanting to learn more of the Force, he’d followed his uncle to the ancient temples.
You’d walked him to the landing platform where his ship was waiting. The coordinates in the little astromech accompanying him. He’d pulled you close, placing a kiss atop your head, easy with his height.
He pulled away, hesitating.
The whispers of his nightmares nipping at his heels.
He could stay.
You seemed to be the only balm to the heated nightmares.
He could stay.
But then he remembered his mother. The Princess and General. The words she’d said to him as he boarded his ship: I’m so proud of you.
He couldn’t stay.
“Please tell me it’s going to be ok?”‘
You looked at the man in front of you, looking more like a scared boy at that moment. You reached up, taking his face gently in your hands. “I’ll be here, no matter what.”
He chuckled, turning his head and kissing one of your palms. “Not really an answer.”
You giggled up at him, beaming in the sunlight.
Beeping sounded loudly, irritatingly, behind you. “I’m coming. I’m coming,” Ben said, turning to throw the words at the droid.
You gave him a watery smile, voice cracking, “Ben-”
“I know,” he said with a wink. He placed another kiss near your hairline and turned toward the ship.
