He didn’t think that Mallowfur would actually say something nice
The two characters seen in the bottom panels are: Stormtuft (grey). He was always kind, loyal, and even though his sister bullied them when they were younger, he stayed by her side, especially when she was injured. He would eventually be rewarded for this honourable behaviour, becoming Mallowfur/star's soon-to-be deputy. Yellow tinge on frame, pale grey eye marking. Snowwillow (white). She was a harsh apprentice. She took pleasure in picking on the kits, and even on her brother. She would eventually grow out of this, but she never showed any remorse for it. She was disrespectful to the other Clans, and occasionally even to her own Clanmates. For this behaviour (and more), she was crippled by Gorseheart (who was one of the cats she bullied), which would eventually lead to her death. Red tinge on frame, dark eye marking.
(Not saying being crippled is bad or a proper punishment, but certain cats were injured specifically in ways that would affect them the most. Not saying it’s good, Gorseheart is supposed to be a bad guy and bad guys do bad things). They’re littermates btw
